It's time to vote for the Detroit Free Press Girls Prep Athlete of the Week for May 18-24. This week's poll features three softball players and one soccer player. Voting will be open until 11:59 a.m. Friday, May 30. We'll announce the winner here shortly after the poll closes. Here are this week's nominees (listed in alphabetical order by last name): McKenna Clouston, Romeo, girls soccer: The junior midfielder had a goal and assist in Romeo's 3-0 win over Utica in the first round of the girls soccer districts on May 21. Clouston scored on a one-time shot from outside of the 18-yard box and then set up Julie Sandoval for Romeo's third goal from a similar location. Kaylin Evans, Detroit Cass Tech, softball: The freshman left-handed pitcher struck out 18 batters while throwing a no-hitter against Detroit Renaissance in a 1-0 win in the Detroit Public School League softball championship on May 24. Mary Gugala, Northville, softball: Gugala threw complete games for Northville in the Kensington Lakes Activities Association (KLAA) softball semifinals and finals last week. Over the 14 innings pitched, Gugala gave up one run on four hits to go along with 16 strikeouts. In the KLAA championship against Salem, Gugala threw seven scoreless innings with one hit allowed and 10 strikeouts in Northville's 1-0 win to repeat as conference champions. Shannon McAuliffe, Salem softball: On the other side of the diamond, the junior starting pitcher from Salem also twirled a gem. McAuliffe struck out 15 batters to go along with three hits allowed in the 1-0 loss to Northville in the KLAA championship. McAuliffe eclipsed 300 strikeouts on the season.
