Wales and Australia hauled off after 12 minutes as match halted before players in tears at end

Wales players were hauled off after just 12 minutes of their match against Australia due toa dramatic storm, with the game eventually ending in tears of joy. With 10 minutes played, Wales scrum-half Keira Bevan nudged a kick into the right corner, with BBC's broadcast showing fans scurrying from a viewing hill to find shelter as thunder roared and the rain continued to pour. Referee Maggie Cogger-Orr made the decision to stop the game after Gwen Crabb was held up over the line. In quite unusual circumstances, play was halted for a total of 30 minutes before resuming. Annabelle Codey had given Australia the lead before the decision was made to stop the game, but with 70 minutes left on the clock and the score just 7-0 to Australia, neither side could complain about losing momentum. Thanks to two tries from Nel Metcalfe and one from Hannah Dallavalle, Wales surged to a memorable 21-12 victory against the Wallaroos. The Wallaroos dominated territory in the second period, but thanks to a superb defensive effort, Wales were able to repel the Aussies on numerous occasions and keep daylight between them on the score line. It marked their first-ever win under new head coach Sean Lynn - a remarkable reaction to their Six Nations whitewash. Wales even had the luxury of bringing on a few younger, inexperienced players towards the close of play, with the game already in the bag as Australia pressured the Welsh try line once more. Seren Lockwood, Katherine Baverstock and Tilly Vucaj earned their first caps for Wales on a famous night for Welsh rugby Down Under. Australia are one of the highest-ranked teams in the world in sixth place, so the victory will fill the players with confidence ahead of the World Cup. Metcalfe, who secured the brace of tries, was named player of the match for her efforts, and paid thanks to Lynn's impact since joining. “It was great to get the first win under Lynny [Sean Lynn]," said Metcalfe to the BBC. "We’ve worked really hard to get the win after eight weeks of pre-season, so it just feels great to get the win. You can pin teams in the corner and it’s hard to exit ,especially when it rains like this but we still wanted to play. "We still showed that, we still moved the ball and that’s what we wanted to do. We are a young group, but we have the vibes and energy since Lynny has come in, and with Alex [Callender] and Kate [Williams] as co-captains. "Hopefully we can build on this next week and into the World Cup." The magnitude of this win was too much for the Welsh Rugby Union's head of women's rugby Belinda Moore, who wiped away tears after the final whistle blew in Brisbane. It wasn't just Moore who was in tears, though, with Welsh captain Alex Callender and Gwenn Crabb visibly moved by the victory. Wales will face Australia again on Friday, August 1 in Sydney, with the opportunity to secure another win and carry vital momentum into their opening World Cup clash against Scotland on August 23. Lynn's side will also face Canada and Fiji in the pool stages.
