When she’s not firing shots at targets, double Olympic medallist Manu Bhaker likes to play violin in her spare time. And it’s not just a pastime. She can play the instrument with some expertise as was evident in a clip shared by the history-maker on the occasion of India’s 79th Independence Day. Bhaker shared a clip of her playing the Indian national anthem on violin and it’s a tune, she says, is closest to her heart which the two-time Olympic bronze medallist wishes to hear everytime she stands on the podium. “An attempt to play the tune that is closest to my heart this Independence Day. Each time I represent India, I wish to stand on the podium and listen to this. Generally, we sit and play the violin, but this time subconsciously, we stood up while playing the National Anthem. Bhaker created history at the Paris Olympics when she became the first ever Indian female shooter to win a medal at the Summer Games. She secured the bronze medal in women’s 10m air pistol event. She didn’t stop at that. Bhaker then joined forces with Sarabjot Singh in the 10m air pistol mixed team event to win her second medal of the quadrennial event in Paris. It was India’s first ever team event medal at an Olympics. This was also the first time that an Indian won two medals at a single Olympics. She cam close to completing a hat-trick of medals but finished fourth in women’s 25m pistol event. Besides her feats at the Paris Olympics, Bhaker has also won medals in the 25m event at the Shooting World Championships – gold in 2023 and silver in 2022. Additionally, she has won gold medals at the Asian Games and CWG.
