Watch: Roy Keane and Micah Richards begin new season with heated row over Man United – ‘This is big boys’ stuff’

The pair served up one of their pantomime fallouts on Sky Sports’ coverage of the opening weekend of the Premier League season as Keane attacked a gaffe from stand-in goalkeeper Altay Bayindir that produced the only goal of the match. Bayindir had flapped at a corner to allow Riccardo Calafiori to nod in on the goal-line. But as the Irishman ranted in the studio over the goalkeeper’s failure to punch the ball clear, Richards waded in to say he was not adequately protected by Mason Mount − prompting Keane to shout at him that the game is “big boys’ stuff”. Richards said United’s positioning for the corner was to blame as Matthijs de Ligt should have been marking the towering Arsenal centre-back William Saliba, who challenged Bayindir as the ball swung in, instead of midfielder Mount. “If you look at the balance between Saliba and Mount at the time, he’s getting ragdolled everywhere,” Richards said. “I just thought De Ligt could have come inside and Mount could have gone outside.” The comments brought a rise out of Keane, with Daniel Sturridge sitting back in his seat and watching the row unfold, as the former United midfielder intervened to tell Richards that “this is big boys’ stuff”. “If they’ve got players a lot bigger than your lads, you’re going to be outmatched somewhere,” said Keane. “You can’t babysit a goalkeeper!” Keane said Bayindir “has to come with violence” during inswinging corners, but he had shown “he’s not strong enough” and it was “far too easy” and “like schoolboy stuff”. Later Richards, who had praised performances from the likes of United debutant Bryan Mbeumo, jokingly urged Keane to “find some positives” in the team’s opening-day performance. But Keane was unable to summon optimism. “The expectations at United now are so low that even when Gary [Neville] is on commentary, everyone’s even comfortable with a 1-0 defeat,” he added. “United have got to do better. It does worry me. Obviously, a couple of the new signings, a lot of encouragement with that. Getting up the pitch there was a bit more power. “Obviously, results are going to improve, it’s always tough against Arsenal, but again no goal, another defeat. There’s still problems there with United. We see with the goal, the set-piece, physicality, determination to get a result, goalkeeper not being strong enough.” As Sky Sports Soccer Sunday returned, some viewers were startled by the novelty of Arsenal’s Martin Odegaard being interviewed at half-time by Patrick Davison. As part of the domestic TV deal worth £6.7bn, broadcasters have been granted more access than ever.
