Wayne Barnes steps in with his cast-iron Jac Morgan verdict

Former international referee Wayne Barnes has delivered his verdict on the Jac Morgan incident that defined the second Test between the Lions and the Wallabies in Melbourne - saying the on-field referee made the correct call. The game was on a knife-edge at the MCG, with the much-improved hosts holding a one-point lead heading into the last seconds. With the Lions on the attack, Welshman Morgan, off the bench and adding real impetus, cleared out Carlo Tizzano resulting in possession staying in the tourists' hands, which ultimately led to Hugo Keenan's match-winning try. There was apprehension around the stadium as referee Andrea Piardi checked the decision with his TMO for foul play before ultimately concluding everything was in order. Barnes praised the call - and the officiating of Piardi, Ben O’Keeffe and Nika Amashukeli in general - and said the officials let the game flow and made the major decisions on the pitch. Writing in the Telegraph , Barnes said he gave a sigh relief on his sofa when the try was given the green light. "When the team of officials met in the middle of the pitch to discuss the match-defining incident, with 90,000 spectators listening to every single word, Piardi began by explaining that Jac Morgan and Carlo Tizzano arrived at the same time," he said. "O’Keeffe added to the dramatic discussion that 'it was dynamic' and Morgan was 'wrapping'. "Piardi then summarised the thoughts of all three – 'It’s play-on for us'. "When Piardi announced the decision of his team over the stadium PA system – a great addition to international rugby, by the way – there was a deluge of noise at the MCG. And there was also a sense of relief on my sofa. "Dan Biggar, on Sky Sports’ commentary, asked: 'Where could he go?' and when Ronan O’Gara was asked what he was seeing he replied quickly: 'Very little'. "I couldn’t have agreed more with the two ex-internationals. Rugby is a dynamic game with lots of moving parts and yes, player safety is at the heart of everything the game is currently doing, but these things happen." Barnes added that it's key to remember that every time there is head contact, it does not necessarily equate to foul play. The incident has sparked huge debate from all corners, with a clear divide emerging from the two camps. Barnes referenced the fact that post-match there had been suggestions among fans and pundits that Tizzano had even dived to make the most of the collision. Adding that he wouldn't pretend to know anything about what it's like to be involved in such a movement, he concluded: "What I do know is that many people will have their own opinions about the final decision, but I thought it was a decision that showed these three officials have a wonderful feel for the game."
