Welsh rugby fans want Shaun Edwards, four regions and 25-cap rule scrapped
@Source: walesonline.co.uk
Welsh rugby fans have had their say on all the big issues in the aftermath of the latest Six Nations campaign.
The sport finds itself at a crossroads after a second consecutive Wooden Spoon, which saw Warren Gatland leave his position as head coach last month.
So, who should replace him? Who should be the new director of rugby? How many Welsh regions should there be going forward?
We put a range of questions to readers, with 5,000 responding with their views.
Who would you ideally like to be Wales' new head coach?
It's highly unlikely to happen, not least because of the amount of money the WRU would have to spend buying him out of his France contract, but the Welsh public's fondness for Shaun Edwards comes as no huge surprise.
He was the clear choice here, taking 42% of the vote. It's probably a non-starter in all likelihood, although Edwards has expressed his desire to be a head coach again in the future after previous success with Wasps and it would be hard to see him turning down Wales if the terms were right. Whether his face would fit in that role at the Union is another matter.
Of the more realistic targets, Bristol's Pat Lam was interestingly ahead of the other names being touted. He has previously spoken fondly of Wales and would love the job. With Franco Smith (10%) seemingly in line to be the next Scotland coach and Simon Easterby (8%) likely to stay with Ireland, Lam is the bookies' favourite right now.

Who should be the next director of rugby?
Before the head coach, the director of rugby appointment will be made. This is believed to be imminent.
We gave readers a choice of candidates who were part of the interview process at the time, including former Wales coach Scott Johnson. The favoured option, however, was a familiar name we threw into the mix - Mike Ruddock.
The Grand Slam-winning coach currently holds an overseeing role at the Ospreys and clearly still has the affections of the Welsh public. Beyond him there wasn't really a name from the initial list that got pulses racing, with 32% of people opting for "someone else".
It's understood other unnamed candidates have emerged later in the process who have impressed the WRU so the actual choice is highly unlikely to be any of these.

How many regions should there be in Welsh rugby?
It's the question that just won't go away, with a raft of pundits and ex-players, including former Wales captain Sam Warburton, calling for at least one Welsh pro team to be axed. The argument is Wales does not have enough money or good players to service four teams and it's suggested cutting one would allow the remaining sides to prosper and raise standards within the squads.
Others disagree, and crucially the WRU and PRB insist they are sticking with four. This question certainly divided opinion somewhat, but 44% of respondents agree with that approach, while 37% say three teams would work best.

Do you still have faith the WRU board can turn things around?
It's been a turbulent couple of years at the WRU, with a perfect storm enveloping the game's administrators in this country. Big decisions need to be made and a plan is already being implemented to improve the pathways and make the next generation of Welsh players better. Will the Union finally get it right? Perhaps unsurprisingly on the back of another Six Nations Wooden Spoon and a game drowning in negativity, there is little confidence the board can deliver what's needed.

When do you think Wales will challenge for the Six Nations title again?
So, when will Wales be challenging for silverware again? Winning a match would be nice right now and the prospect of troubling the top end of the Six Nations table seems some time off. Just 5% of respondents believe Wales can challenge next season, while the most popular answer (30%) predicts the nation will be starved of major rugby success until 2030 and beyond.

Who was Wales’ best player in this year’s Six Nations?
Only one winner here after the incredible efforts of Jac Morgan. Special mentions to maverick full-back Blair Murray and the ageless Taulupe Faletau.

Should the 25-cap rule be scrapped?
This topic always seems a little bit of a peculiar debating point seeing as the rule currently impacts very few players, but the principle is what gets people riled up. It was designed to help keep players in Wales and the regions strong, while also giving the Wales head coach full access to as many players as possible during training camps.
It will be reviewed over the coming months and the vast majority of people seemingly would be happy for it to go.

How many Wales players will make the Lions tour?
We know there are currently 75 players on a longlist ahead of the final selection in May, so how many are Welsh and how many of those will actually make the final tour?
It would be a travesty if Morgan is not there, so there should be at least one. The most popular answer among readers was actually two players, with the likes of Dewi Lake, Tomos Williams, Jenkins and Faletau all having cases.

Will Wales beat Japan in the summer?
It feels like we have reached the nadir, right?
Wales' summer tour of Japan offers hope the 17-match losing streak will finally be ended against Eddie Jones' side, but it won't be easy.
Japan are one place below Wales in the rankings and defeat in the two-Test series doesn't really bear thinking about. At least there is some much-needed public confidence here, with 70% expecting Wales to triumph.

Who should be Wales’ outside-half going forward?
How's this for a split?
While most people seem agreed that Warren Gatland's Ben Tomas experiment should not be repeated, there is a tie between Jarrod Evans and young Dan Edwards when it comes to who should wear the most famous jersey of them all going forward.
They are the two standout candidates among the public, with Evans impressing off the bench during the Six Nations and Edwards growing in stature every week at the Ospreys. If you want to split them, Evans actually had 17 more votes.

Jarrod Evans 37% (1,502 votes)
Dan Edwards 37% (1,485 votes)

What is the most important issue Welsh rugby needs to solve?
The sheer breadth of answers to this open question maybe shows why navigating Welsh rugby through choppy waters is such a tricky business, but there are some key themes to emerge.
Among them are calls for urgent improvements to the academy and pathway systems that have diminished over the past 10 years and seen age-grade sides struggle. A major part of making this and other things better is investment, with fans wanting the WRU to plough more money into developing the players of the future.
Elsewhere, the debate over the number of pro teams raged large, with plenty of people suggesting a three-team East, West and Mid Wales model is the way to go.
Attendances at regional games were highlighted as being poor, with the United Rugby Championship failing to capture the imaginations of many supporters amid fears over the younger generation drifting from watching the game.
Indeed, youngsters playing the game (or not playing the game) was a big issue for many amid suggestions not enough rugby is being played in Welsh schools these days. School is where every player used to start but countless readers say focus on the sport has been lost amid the popularity in football and the general lifestyle changes of the smartphone generation.
