CLEVELAND, Ohio — At the end of his freshman year, without playing a single varsity snap, Archbishop Hoban’s Sam Greer picked up his first offer to play collegiate football from the Ohio State Buckeyes.
On Tuesday, approaching two years since that offer, Greer announced his commitment to play for the Buckeyes, joining Avon Lake’s Maxwell Riley as offensive line coach Tyler Bowen’s second commit since his arrival less than two months ago.
Greer chose Ohio State over Michigan, Penn State, Missouri, Florida, Tennessee and plenty of others.
“My mom wants me to stay close to home,” Greer told cleveland.com in the fall. “My brother, he’s at West Point right now playing football, so she’s very sad that he’s gone. So I mean, I want to go play where the best football’s at and where my best opportunity is at.”
Standing at 6-foot-7, 315 pounds with a 7-foot wingspan Greer is, literally, a massive addition to Ohio State football’s 2026 recruiting class. He is the No. 17 ranked offensive tackle in the country and the No. 9 ranked player in Ohio.
Greer also joined Nick Bosa and Mylan Graham as big-name recruits that received their first offer from the Buckeyes.
Obviously, he has the requisite size to play Big Ten football, but one look at Greer on the basketball court and it’s easy to see why he is a four-star recruit.
After missing the end of his freshman football season Greer’s first introduction for those outside of Hoban came on the basketball court.
"He’s a hell of player. We knew that as a freshman‚" Tyrrell said after Greer’s initial offer from the Buckeyes. "we wanted to move him up, but then everyone got to see his athletic ability playing basketball. He’s a hell of a football player, we knew that going in, it’s just that not everybody other than us got a chance to see it.”
He began his freshman basketball season playing JV. By the end of the year, he was starting for the Knights in the OHSAA Division I state semifinal. He held Mr. Basketball winner Devin Royal to 5 of 15 shooting in the state championship that year to help the Knights win their first state basketball championship since 1989.
Greer showcased his athleticism, footwork and a ball-handling ability that is rare for someone of his stature. He had Hoban head football coach Tim Tyrrell giddy with excitement thinking about what the future could hold, and has been a priority for Ohio State since.
Keeping him on the basketball court was a priority for Knights head basketball coach T.K. Griffith too.
“He’s got great feet. He’s got great hands, too,” Knights head basketball coach T.K. Griffith said. “He’s still young. His ceiling has not been reached yet as far as when get gets his strength, agility and all the things that he wants to work on, football-wise, but it’s just fun to have him around. He changes the dynamic of the game.”
Ohio State is no stranger to big-time tackle recruits that showcased their ability on the gridiron and the hardwood. Former Ohio State tackle Dawand Jones didn’t even play football until his junior year of high school before going on to lead Ben Davis (Ind.) to a state championship and start for the Buckeyes for two full seasons.
Like Jones, Greer’s size, athleticism and footwork made him a no-brainer from a recruiting standpoint.
Last fall Greer completed a full football season for the first time in his high school career, making the All-Ohio first team alongside Riley, and the cleveland.com all-area first team.
With a state basketball championship and a first-team All-Ohio selection under his belt the last thing for Greer to do before stepping foot on Ohio State’s campus is try and help lift the Knights to that elusive state football championship this coming fall.
