What Ruben Amorim told Manchester United players at half-time in extra time

Ruben Amorim used his half-time team talk in extra-time to adjust the positions of Manchester United's tie-salvaging heroes Kobbie Mainoo and Harry Maguire against Lyon. United were 3-2 down and 5-4 behind on aggregate with 15 minutes left in their Europa League quarter-final but Luke Shaw conceded a penalty that Alexandre Lacazette converted in the 109th minute. Remarkably, United scored three goals in seven madcap minutes to progress to the semi-finals, where they will face Athletic Bilbao. In the absence of a striker, Mainoo replaced Rasmus Hojlund and curled in a 120th-minute equaliser. Maguire, who had moved up front to provide presence, then nodded in a 121st-minute winner. "At half-time in extra time, was to change the positions," Amorim explained, "to try to be really clear about the position of Harry Maguire, try to put Casemiro nearer the goal, Kobbie Mainoo near the goal, Mason Mount to cross balls and try to explain that we need to score one goal and anything can change. "So it’s try to push for the team. But it’s a difficult moment and you have to be really lucky to change the game and I think that was the case today. "You think it’s hard (to come back) but you try to make some changes or try to push the players and force yourself to give energy to the players. In this stadium and in this club you always have that feeling that anything can happen and today was another day like that." Maguire went up front with United 1-0 down at Nottingham Forest two weeks ago and came close to equalising. The 32-year-old's header against Lyon was his fourth goal of the campaign and second added-time winner following the decisive goal against Leicester City in the FA Cup . Maguire also scored beyond the 90th minute to equalise against Porto in October. Amorim dismissed the possibility that Maguire could start a match up front. "To play a normal game, no. But in these moments, it’s something that is really important. "When I see Harry Maguire and I put Harry Maguire as a striker, I just see one guy inside the box, is he good or not inside the box? If he’s in the opposite box, he’s a striker, not a defender, he knows how to behave in that space. It’s just to put different characteristics and different moments." United were the superior side in the first half and led 2-0 at the interval. The enforced removal of Noussair Mazraoui appeared to upset United's balance and Lyon scored twice within six minutes to level on the night and the tie. A relatively routine victory would not have been celebrated as up roariously as United's improbable comeback, which sparked scenes to rival any of their added-time winners at Old Trafford in recent memory. Amorim was still dwelling on the roar that greeted Mainoo's and Maguire's goals at his post-match press conference. " The sound of the last two goals were amazing, that is something we can keep for the future. Was a good feeling but in the end of the game, you go to the semi-finals but you need to win it. We just need to focus on the next stage and try to win the competition. "I think that’s why we like this sport so much and all the frustration that the coach has in this kind of season, the frustration, the bad moments, when you have moments like this, it’s all worth it. "But then you finish, you calm down and we have a game on Sunday, we have to see all the players, if they are fit to play because we have to focus a lot on Europa League . "I think these kind of moments can help a lot the players in this kind of season, this kind of context. They can create some connection with the fans and the players and we can forget for a few minutes what kind of a season we are having. "But again, today is a good feeling but tomorrow we start everything again. So we need to focus on the next game, to focus on the players, if they are fit to play, we have to take a risk and save some players. "Because if you look at our season, the most important thing for everybody is Europa League."
