Why Mike Vrabel praised Drake Maye after uneven Patriots practice in Minnesota

EAGAN, Minn. — It’s not easy to decode the Vikings defense.
Let alone as a second-year quarterback with a young offensive line.
And that is precisely why Mike Vrabel praised Drake Maye for his performance in Wednesday’s joint practice with the Vikings, the first of two for the Patriots this week. Maye finished 16-of-25 with six sacks that day, but avoided major blunders and pushed through to eventually throw two long touchdowns, including one that capped a 2-minute drill.
“I thought he did well,” Vrabel said before Thursday’s practice. “It’s easy to go into a blender when you’re seeing a bunch of this stuff and kind of scrambling and turning one less than favorable play into a real s— storm. So, I didn’t see that. I thought he was able to process. And we didn’t execute all the time, but I didn’t see any panic from him.
Vrabel continued: “I thought he was able to communicate and get the things that he wanted and then hit some plays because of it. When we blocked him, we were able to make some plays and then we’ll just have to try to see what happens today and continue to go from there.”
On Thursday, Maye went 8-of-12 in team periods with six sacks. He has thrown just three interceptions through 16 training camp practices, including three joint sessions with the Vikings and Commanders. Under defensive coordinator Brian Flores, Minnesota’s defense has gained a reputation as one of the most aggressive and complicated in the league.
Said Pats center Garrett Bradbury: “I mean, this (Vikings defense) is as confusing as it’s going to get all year.”
