With Dolphins in town, Bears excited to 'beat up on somebody else'

The Dolphins practiced on the backfields of Halas Hall on Thursday. Friday, they’ll join up with the Bears for a joint practice. “What do I like about joint practices is having the opportunity to compete against somebody else,” Bears defensive tackle Grady Jarrett said Thursday. “As you can see, when we get a real chippy practice like we had [Tuesday], we can be tired of seeing each other for a little while. So you get to beat up on somebody else and just see where you stand.” Defensive coordinator Dennis Allen is curious to see how his team fares against Mike McDaniel’s creative offense, particularly before the snap. The Dolphins do more than just use presnap motion — last year, they had players still in motion at the snap 56% of the time, more than double the league average of 25%. “It will be good for us to see something different, some new formations, some new motions, shifts, all those kinds of things — test out our rules,” Allen said. Earlier this week, the Bears finished installing their entire playbook. Joint practice is a good opportunity to see what works well. “We play against our guys all the time,” offensive coordinator Declan Doyle said. “We get pretty used to how they play certain things. It’s a lot better for the quarterbacks, the wideouts, everybody, the O-line, picking up different pressure and things like that. The variety of those joint practices is really valuable.” In and out Tight end Cole Kmet, who left practice early Tuesday, was a full participant Thursday. He nearly caught a seam pass from quarterback Williams that would have been the best play of the day — only it was deflected by safety Kevin Byard. “Cole ran a great route …” Williams said. “[Byard] reached out and didn’t actually look back at the ball and the ball just ended up hitting his hands. It was one of those [where the] DB got kinda lucky.” Two starters — right tackle Darnell Wright and slot cornerback Kyler Gordon — left Thursday’s light practice with apparent injuries, as did cornerback Ameer Speed. Running back Roschon Johnson and center Doug Kramer did not practice because of foot injuries.
