Market vendors in Seaqaqa, Macuata, shed tears of joy yesterday while attending the groundbreaking ceremony of their market and bus stand in Seaqaqa yesterday.
This means that upon the completion of the project by the end of next year, they would no longer sell vegetables under a temporary shelter with tarpaulin above their head.
Former President of Fiji, Tui Macuata Ratu Wiliame Katonivere, was chief guest at the ceremony.
He said as Tui Macuata he supported the project and urged everyone for support.
“Development is not about concrete and buildings; It is about people, system and unlocking possibilities and opportunities,” Ratu Wiliame said.
“The success of this facility will depend not just on Government, but on us, the people of Macuata.”
He said Seaqaqa spanned more than half of province of Macuata from the District of Sasa, Macuata, Seaqaqa to Dreketi.
Within this land, there are 39 villages, 23 settlements and more than 3000 households with a growing population of over 14,000.
“This is not just an expanse of geography, it is the heart beat of Macuata where our farmers rise early to tend the land, our children walk to 20 primary and five secondary schools and our elderly carry the wisdom of generations,” he said.
Minister for Local Government and Housing Maciu Nalumisa said the Seaqaqa Market would be a vibrant centre of economic activity, a place of connection, exchange and community.
“It will include space for 50 vendors, dedicated sections for fresh produce, yaqona, handicrafts and a hygienic, well-designed fish market.
There will be accessible sanitation facilities, showers, and amenities for persons with disabilities because dignity belongs to everyone.
He said the new bus stand would improve daily travel for commuters and bring greater convenience to the people of Seaqaqa and surrounding areas.
“With secure vendor parking, a drop-off zone, administrative offices and attractive landscaping, this development will become the beating heart of a growing township,” Mr Nalumisa said.
“This investment of $1.7 million (VEP) by your Government is expected to be completed by the end of 2026.
This project is a promise: that you are seen, you are valued, and you are part of Fiji’s future.”
