WRU investigate as players allegedly damage hotel and storm concert stage

The Welsh Rugby Union has launched an investigation after some members of the Wales U20s squad were accused of being involved in a series of unsavoury incidents while away in Italy, including storming the stage at a local festival and causing thousands of pounds of damage at the hotel they were staying at. Richard Whiffin's squad had their eighth-placed finish at the World Rugby U20 Championships in Italy confirmed on Saturday (July 19) as they were beaten 31-23 by the tournament hosts , having won just one of their five games in the competition. But just hours after the final whistle sounded in Rovigo, some of the squad were allegedly causing havoc in the city centre. Members of the squad have been accused in the Italian press of drunkenly disrupting a local festival by storming the stage and stealing a microphone from an event host, as well as urinating on walls and knocking over signs, furniture and bins outside bars and restaurants. Players are also alleged to have caused "a few thousand Euros" of damage at the hotel they were staying at, with "several" doors broken in addition to "inappropriate" behaviour that saw them repeatedly reprimanded by hotel staff. A WRU spokesperson said the union is aware of the reports and is looking into the matter, but would respond appropriately when all the facts had been established. The report from Il Gazzettino alleges that a group of players, identified as members of the Welsh squad, were the subject of complaints early on Saturday evening as they were "seen intoxicated and wandering aimlessly" through the city streets. Residents claimed to the publication that the players were "confused, asking for directions, shouting and urinating on walls," while it is alleged that they were then refused entry to a bar. It is also claimed that the players later began knocking over signs and furniture from restaurants and bars. A group of players are then said to have disrupted the 'Voices for Freedom' festival - a music and civil rights event that was taking place in the city that night - with "loud shouts and bad behaviour" before two of them allegedly got past security and onto the stage. They are then alleged to have grabbed a microphone from one of the event hosts and "shouted incomprehensible phrases" into it, ignoring calls to stop before continuing to behave in a disorderly manner. Alongside their actions on Saturday night, it has also been alleged members of the squad are responsible for significant damage caused during their stay at the Hotel Capital in Rovigo. The report claims owners and staff faced a "nightmare" during the squad's stay, with "several" doors broken, in addition to "inappropriate" behaviour that saw some players walk around the hotel barefoot and shirtless, acting loudly and "disrespecting the presence of other guests". Hotel staff reportedly told Il Gazzettino that they had to constantly reprimand those involved and that they were shocked by the behaviour they witnessed. A Welsh Rugby Union spokesperson said: “We are aware of the reports and are looking into the matter. We will respond in the appropriate manner when all the facts of the situation have been established.”
