WRU to announce next rugby chief within hours as new era begins
@Source: walesonline.co.uk
The Welsh Rugby Union will officially unveil Dave Reddin as its new director of rugby in less than 24 hours. Reddin faces a huge task trying to turn around the fortunes of Welsh rugby, with the men's national side currently on a record losing run of 17 Test matches, while Wales Women are also winless so far in this year's Six Nations . But his first task will be to appoint a new head coach for the men's national team, with Steve Tandy the clear front runner for that role. Reddin has an impressive CV, having been England's national fitness coach when they were crowned world champions in 2003. 25% OFF DEAL NOW: Sign up to Inside Welsh rugby on Substack to get exclusive news stories and insight from behind the scenes in Welsh rugby. He was also a member of Sir Clive Woodward's backroom team on the ill-fated British & Irish Lions tour of New Zealand in 2005. Reddin spent six years at the FA as head of team strategy and performance, while has also held the role of head of performance services at the British Olympic Association. He was awarded an MBE in 2004. Those who have worked with Reddin describe him as someone who demands incredibly high standards for those around him. Reddin has a reputation as a tough taskmaster who sets high standards and WalesOnline understands he will be given the power to shape the WRU's elite performance team as he sees fit. There is an acceptance within the WRU they cannot hope to produce a strong national side without competitive professional clubs. Reddin will also focus heavily on the pathway as the WRU look to produce enough quality players to service four professional clubs. He has previously explained his preference is to work with a collaborative head coach, something he feels former England rugby boss Woodward was good at. “He was the first leader I encountered – and one of the few since – who understood the value of bringing people together and democratising the conversation," Reddin has said. “The fitness coach I was was just as entitled to have an opinion on coaching as the coaches were about the work I was doing in the gym or on the field. During his time at the FA, where he worked with Gareth Southgate's England team on their route to the 2018 World Cup semi-finals, Reddin said he was happiest when working quietly behind the scenes. It's understood the Union may yet make another appointment which will see someone with an intimate knowledge of Welsh rugby take on a role beneath Reddin.
