You Are Not On Holiday..: Gautam Gambhir Defends BCCI's Diktat After Virat Kohli's Fierce Criticism

Gautam Gambhir came out in strong defence of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) after a major diktat issued earlier this year divided opinions among the cricket fraternity following a review meet which took place following India's disastrous display in the 2024-25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) in Australia. The Indian cricket board announced a 10-point diktat towards players, tightening rules on away trips. The major one which caught everyone's attention and led to furore from some corners was the decision not to allow families to stay with players on the entire away trips. The new mandate issued by BCCI stated that WAGS and children can be with players only for two weeks of away tours, which are longer than 45 days. Many cricket fans, as well as former cricketers, questioned the decision. The most vocal critic came from Indian cricket superstar Virat Kohli, who announced his retirement before India played another Test match following the rule being issued. "It's very difficult to explain to people how grounding it is to just come back to your family every time you have something which is intense, which happens on the outside. I don't think people have an understanding of what value it brings to a large extent. And I feel quite disappointed about that because it's like people who have no control over what's going on are kind of brought into conversations and put out at the forefront that, 'oh, maybe they need to be kept away',” said " Kohli said at the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) Innovation Lab Indian Sports Summit in March. "If you ask any player, do you want your family to be around you all the time? You'll be like, yes. I don't want to go to my room and just sit alone and sulk. I want to be able to be normal. And then you can really treat your game as something that is a responsibility. You finish that responsibility, and you come back to life,” Kohli added. Gautam Gambhir Breaks Silence Gambhir spoke on the issue for the first time and came out in strong defense on BCCI's rule. The Indian cricket team head coach stated that while he is not against having families around, he pointed out that players are not coming on holiday and must remain aware of what their ultimate motive is. "Families are important, but you've got to understand one thing. You are here for a purpose. It's not a holiday. You're here for a huge purpose. You've got very few people in that dressing room or in this tour that gets this opportunity to make the country proud. So yes, I'm not against not having families with us. "It is important to have families, but if your focus is towards making our country proud and you have a much bigger role than any other thing, and you're committed to that goal, you're committed to that cause, I think everything else is fine. But for me, I think that cause and that goal is more important than any other thing," Gambhir said on Sony Sports in an interaction with Cheteshwar Pujara. Days after the strict rule was issued by BCCI, Rohit Sharma's remark to Ajit Agarkar before a press conference about players complaining about it had gone viral.
