Meanwhile, reports suggest that the Zimbabwean government had promised a ₦300 million ($150,000) reward if the team had pulled off an upset victory.
Magwizi hails Zimbabwe’s fighting spirit
Heading into the game, Zimbabwe were clear underdogs. Facing a star-studded Nigerian side at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium, they were expected to struggle.
And for much of the game, they did. Sitting deep, absorbing pressure, and waiting for counterattacking opportunities.
When Victor Osimhen broke the deadlock in the 74th minute, it seemed like another routine win for the Super Eagles.
However, the Warriors refused to roll over. They hit the crossbar before finding an equaliser in the 87th minute, courtesy of Tawada Chidera, securing a result that felt like a victory for Zimbabwean football.
Following the match, Magwizi commended both players and coaching staff, saying, "Every player fought for the badge, and this performance gives us confidence as we continue our World Cup qualification journey and preparations for Morocco 2025."
Zimbabwe miss out on ₦300 million prize
Beyond the pride of securing a point against Nigeria, reports emerged that Zimbabwe’s government had promised a staggering ₦300 million ($150,000) reward if the Warriors had won the match.
This wasn’t a one-off offer as a similar amount had been promised for a victory against Benin, but after a 2-2 draw, the focus shifted to Nigeria.
President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s administration was reportedly eager to motivate the team with financial incentives, hoping it would fuel an upset against the Super Eagles.
Had Zimbabwe managed to snatch a late winner, the players, coaching staff, and support team would have walked away with a massive payday.
While the bonus remains unclaimed, the Warriors can still take pride in their performance against Nigeria’s Super Eagles.
