Forty-seven tenants of the Public Rental Board (PRB) Estate in Narere in Nasinu received offer letters to purchase their homes at highly subsidised prices yesterday.
Minister for Housing and Local Government, Maciu Nalumisa, officially handed over the offer letters during a ceremony at the Narere PRB Estate.
“This is your moment and we are proud to walk this journey with you,” Mr Nalumisa told the recipients.
The initiative marked a significant milestone in the Government’s commitment to promote home ownership among long-term PRB tenants.
“This has been a long-awaited dream for many of you and it is a chance to move from uncertainty to stability, from tenancy to ownership,” Mr Nalumisa said.
The offer prices were significantly below market value, allowing tenants to secure financing through institutions like the Housing Authority or other banks.
Recipients can use their savings or Fiji National Provident Fund to acquire the properties.
Mr Nalumisa stressed that the initiative aligned with the national housing policy that prioritises low-income families and vulnerable communities.
He also highlighted other housing achievements including the Fiji Home Ownership Grant, which supported 113 households with $1.9 million in 2024 and the Lagilagi Low Cost Housing Project for 36 families.
During his address, Minister Nalumisa urged the community to work together to address social problems, specifically mentioning concerns about drugs and increasing HIV/AIDS rates among young people.
“We need to stand together, not only you, all of us as a community, to address some of the social problems happening in our society,” he said.
The minister acknowledged community leaders and committee members who played key roles in making the initiative possible, who regularly advocated for the estate residents.
