Bargain Hunt star reveals how TV legend Terry Wogan took swipe at show

Bargain Hunt's Thomas Forrester has spilled the beans that not everyone was enamoured with the enduring BBC daytime antiques programme. The show is set to mark its 25th birthday next week with a special episode airing on Thursday 13 March, and Thomas took a trip down memory lane, recalling how TV legend Terry Wogan didn't hold back his thoughts on the series when it first hit screens.
In a documentary about Bargain Hunt, Thomas, now 50, reminisced about his early days on the show as a "very young boy". He recalled an episode where he and fellow antiques aficionado Philip Serrell, now 70, splashed out over £300 on two items they believed would fetch a pretty penny at auction. Unfortunately, their gamble didn't pay off, resulting in a significant loss when the items went under the hammer.
Thomas said: "I was a very young boy when I joined as an expert. I'd say my most memorable object was when Philip and I were at Shepton Mallet in the early 2000s. It was a prime-time show back then and on in the evening. I bought a pedal car and Philip had bought a cut-out wooden turkey fairground ride.
"Now we spent over £300 on this and, the next day, Terry Wogan on the radio said 'I have just watched two supposed BBC experts burn through over £300 in under 20 minutes'. Sir Terry witnessed my downfall," reports the Mirror.
The premise of the show sees two competing dealers guide two teams of contestants as they purchase items from antique shops and fairs. These items are then sold at auction, with the team making the most profit declared the winner.
The upcoming Bargain Hunt documentary has sparked a bit of a stir as news broke that Tim Wonnacott, who presented the popular show for 12 years, is only featured briefly in the special anniversary episode. The 73 year old TV personality led the antique treasure hunt from 2003 to 2015 before departing due to "personal reasons".
At his exit, the BBC appreciated his efforts with a statement: "We would like to thank Tim Wonnacott for his dedication to Bargain Hunt over the last twelve-years and for the great expertise that he has brought to the show in that time. Bargain Hunt will be moving in a new direction next year utilising a team of experts who present a number of shows each. Tim continues to work with the BBC on Antiques Road Trip."
The celebration documentary 25 Years Of Bargain Hunt will feature crowd favourites such as Anita Manning, Philip Serrell, Kate Bliss, Danny Sebastian, and Thomas Forrester sharing tales of their shrewdest purchases and most cherished experiences. However, despite Tim's lengthy run as the face of the programme, a television source revealed that he "barely gets a look-in" in the 45 minute homage - appearing for a scant 20 seconds in fleeting clips.
The show's host, Charlie Ross, gives a nod of appreciation to Tim for originating the iconic Bargain Hunt "high kick", which has become an endearing tradition among contestants and experts, wrapping up each episode on a memorable note. The camera cuts to memorable clips of Tim being the pioneer of the energetic gesture, followed by snippets of others replicating the move as a quirky conclusion to the show. Charlie acknowledges Tim's contribution to the programme's heritage, exclaiming: "It started with Tim Wonnacott!"
