BASEBALL: WESTERN WINS CLASH OF TITANS
When it’s a clash between Bay City Western and Flint Powers, your pitching had better be on point.
And Brayden Simmon and Gabe Wegener were a picture of precision for the Warriors.
Firing back-to-back pitching gems, Simmon and Wegener propelled No. 2-ranked Western to 2-1 and 9-0 victories over No. 14 Powers in a matchup of the past two Saginaw Valley League champions.
“Simmon and Wegener were outstanding,” Western coach Tim McDonald said. “They were in complete control and gave Powers very few scoring opportunities. We played outstanding defense all day and played solid situational baseball.”
Western and Powers waged five straight battles decided by two runs or less, so both sides knew every run would be big in this year’s showdown. That would be the case in Game 1 as the contest stretched into extra innings knotted at 1-1.
Western (13-1, 7-1) got a leadoff walk from Cal Plarske followed by a clutch RBI triple from Jack Sequin to take the lead in the top of the eighth. But Powers got a double play to stay within a run and build more drama for its final cuts.
Simmon returned to the hill and finished what he started for Western. The senior went all eight innings, finishing with a two-hit, 11 strikeout performance after taking a no-hitter into the seventh. He got the final two outs with the tying run on base.
Wegener followed suit in Game 2, allowing three hits while striking out nine in the five-inning contest. Western managed to break this one open for a pivotal sweep in its SVL title quest.
Sequin came through with three more hits and two RBIs while Mikey DeLuca knocked two hits. Western tagged 13 hits by 10 different batters in the nightcap.
BASEBALL: FRESHMAN SPARKS PINCONNING
When Alex Rivard stepped to the plate for Pinconning, it was bad news for Farwell.
The freshman No. 9 batter delivered a perfect day of hitting, propelling the Spartans to 10-6 and 13-3 victories over Farwell in Jack Pine Conference action.
“Alex Rivard had a day to remember,” Pinconning coach Casey Pashak said. “He went 6-for-6 at the plate, with five of them being hard-hit line drives.”
Pinconning (8-7, 3-5) came up big when it counted, putting five runs on the board in the fifth inning of Game 1 after Farwell drew within 5-4. Rivard had three hits and Landen Enciso added two hits with two RBIs. Blake Kareus struck out six in six innings for the win.
The Spartans broke Game 2 open with an eight-run third inning. Rivard had three hits with two RBIs while Calvin Holland knocked two hits and drove in three runs. Alex Shelagowski fanned five over six innings on the hill.
BASEBALL: DEFENSE MAKES DIFFERENCE FOR BCC
Bay City Central waged two tough battles with Davison, pulling out the opener 6-4 before dropping the nightcap 12-10 in Saginaw Valley League action.
The Wolves (5-8, 5-3) brought their gloves for Game 1, giving them the edge while backing pitchers Nick Charbonneau and Jose Costilla. The Central hurlers combined for five Ks in the win.
“Nick threw well and we finally got our defense behind him,” Central coach Brady Neitzel said. “The last couple outings, he’s thrown well but didn’t have the support behind him. The team was behind him today.”
Aaron Kain delivered two hits in the win while Kain, Costilla, Wyatt Stachowiak and Joseph Gibson each notched RBIs.
Central led 9-2 in Game 2 but let it get away as Davison plated nine fourth-inning runs. Kain added two more hits and joined Stachowiak with two RBIs. Cam Reed rapped a double for the Wolves.
BASEBALL: GLENN SETTLES FOR A TIE
After a rough 17-3 loss in the opener, John Glenn responded in Game 2 to battle Croswell-Lexington to a 4-4 draw.
Garrett Hilborn blasted a two-run homer in the nightcap for Glenn while Remington Ranck had a double among his two hits. The game was halted after five innings by darkness.
Game 1 got away from Glenn to a hot-hitting Cros-Lex. Gunner Mezey had two hits for the Bobcats while Hilborn knocked an RBI double.
BASEBALL: ALL SAINTS IS ROLLING
Bay City All Saints extended its shutout streak to four games before allowing a single run, sweeping Caseville 15-0 and 20-1.
The Cougars (11-2) got a four-inning one-hitter with seven strikeouts from Sawyer Eager then a three-inning one-hitter with two Ks from Brenner Gansser in the twinbill.
“The boys have been consistent all week and -- for the most part -- all year,” All Saints coach Brian Good said. “A combination of stellar pitching and quality at-bats have put us on a nice run to start the season.”
Drew Andrzejewski delivered three hits with two RBIs in Game 1 while Jeffrey Hartman drilled two doubles and drove in four runs for the Cougars.
Jack Wetters had a double and triple among three hits in Game 2. Gavyn Aikens and Dylan Paul each had two hits and two RBIs while Levi Johnson added two hits.
BASEBALL: SSC BROTHERS ARE PAIR OF ACES
It was a good day for the Bartlett boys.
Brothers Branton and Brock Bartlett took turns chalking up outs as No. 5-ranked Standish-Sterling swept Harrison 20-1 and 20-0.
Branton Bartlett struck out six and allowed two hits over four innings in the Game 1 win while Brock Bartlett came back with a three-inning no-hitter and seven Ks in Game 2.
The Panthers (13-0-1) got three-hit performances at the plate from Brock Bartlett and Kasen Wendel in the opener. Carson Koin drove in four runs while Wendel, Preston Kann and Ben Briggs had three RBIs apiece.
Trace Collins ripped three hits for five RBIs in the nightcap while Kann brought home four more runs and Ty Yorton tallied two hits and three RBIs.
GOLF: GLENN FRESHMAN LEADS THE WAY
Playing from the back tees presents a challenge at Bay County Golf Course.
But John Glenn freshman Mason Hayes was up to the task.
Hayes fired a 76, capturing medalist honors in the first Tri-Valley Conference Jamboree of the season. He led the Bobcats to a fourth-place finish at 354.
Hunter Piorkowski shot 89, Will Stopyak 91 and Logan Bitzer 98 for Glenn.
