Cheltenham Festival 2025: Day 2 tips for Coral Cup, Novices Hurdle, Queen Mother Champion Chase and more
@Source: dailyrecord.co.uk
By Bob Cross After an exhilarating opening day where we witnessed one of the most unlikely Champion Hurdles, we go again for day two of the greatest show on turf. The going yesterday seemed to be on the good side of soft and I am hoping there will have been a drop of rain overnight to assist my selections. We start with the Turner Novices Hurdle, which is off at 1.20. FINAL DEMAND (nap) is the horse I am backing here. Trained by the Master of Closutton, Willie Mullins, the six year old son of Walk in The Park has won his three races without breaking sweat. Any horse here hoping to make a race of this will need to have improved dramatically from known form. If you put a line through POTTERS CHARM'S last run, you could make a case for him to be competitive in this event. The Sir Alex Ferguson owned gelding had possibly had too busy a period when failing here in January. I am hoping the rest and the application of a tongue tie may assist him to run into a place. The Brown Advisory Novices Chase comes under starters orders at 2.00 and sees another odds on favourite who is hard to oppose. Owned by Lanarkshire Businessman Ronnie Bartlett, BALLYBURN has won two of his three chasing starts impressively. His one defeat came to Sir Gino who misses this year's festival having suffered an infection following an injury. There are only seven horses in this race but we will put our each way shilling on STELLAR STORY who has course and distance form here and odds around 16/1 represents reasonable value. The Coral Cup is off at 2.40 and is one of my favourite races of the year. A number of these horses will be aimed specifically for this event and previous form may well go out the window. Having said that AL GASPARO has won two of his last three races and his handicap mark does not look too harsh and he merits the investment of my each way shilling. Dan Skelton has trained the winner of this race the last two years. He is a shrewd man and knows how to beat the handicapper. I am hoping he has worked his magic again with BE AWARE and hopefully he can land this valuable pot. The Cross Country Chase is the next event at 2.40. This year it reverts to being a handicap and this , supposedly, should make this a very close affair. Having suffered the disappointment of seeing his stable star, Constitution Hill, falling yesterday Nicky Henderson will be looking for better luck with his charge here. Incredibly, MISTER COFFEY has never won over fences , yet he is always there or thereabouts at the finish. He is getting a big weight advantage over the likely favourite Stumptown, and I hope this will be enough to reverse the placings of the December contest here. Our each way selection is LATENIGHTPASS who loves this unique course. The 4.00 race sees The Queen Mother Champion Chase and this looks like the most competitive of the Grade One races this year. Previous winners Captain Guinness and Energumene take on the legend that is JONBON. The nine year old gelding looked outstanding when winning at Ascot at the start of the year and I think he will break his festival hoodoo here (he was second in 2022 and 2023 before missing the meeting last year with injury). Having trained the winner of yesterday's Fred Winter, Joseph O'Brien has a chance of following up with the improving seven year old, SOLNESS . I will be having a small each way wager on this beauty but I think his best days are still to come. The Johnny Henderson Grand Annual at 4.40 looks a particularly competitive event. Gavin Cromwell hit the bar three times yesterday with three of his five entries finishing in the first three. He does exceptionally well with the team he has and I think he has a real chance of winning the prize here with MY MATE MOZZIE who was third last year at Royal Ascot. Do not throw your betting slip away too early as this horse is guaranteed to come from the back and finish fast. I will be having an each way shilling on JPR ONE who returns to the handicap sphere after trying his hand at a higher level with moderate success. The final race of the day is the Champion Bumper at 5.20 and Willie Mullins looks likely to dominate this affair with his five entries all in with a chance. Both our selections are trained by the genius and I just hope we do not pick the wrong two! COPACABANA has only raced once under rules, but he looked incredible and if he brings the same sort of attitude here he will be in with a great chance of following up that success with another. GAME OF INCHES is our each way punt. He is another who has only raced once before. He is a big strapping horse and I am sure it wont be long before we see him tackling fences. Bob's Barmy Bookie Buster is where we try to find the big return for little investment. We are looking for big each way prices – taking advantage of extra bonus places being offered. Today we offer up a five pence each way lucky thirty one with Skybet. Total cost £ 3.10. 1.20 Sixmilebridge (Paying 4 Places) 2.40 Ballyadam (Paying 8 Places) 3.20 Escaria Ten (Paying 6 Places) 4.40 American Mike (Paying 6 Places) 5.20 No Drama This End (Paying 5 Places)
