Officials say this is one of the deadliest plane crashes in northeastern Africa in the past two decades.
The Antonov aircraft went down yesterday in a populated district of Omdurman, injuring at least 10 others, according to the government-run Khartoum Media Office.
Initially, the Sudanese Health Ministry reported 19 fatalities.
In a statement, the military confirmed that the plane crashed while attempting to take off from the Wadi Sayidna air base, located north of Omdurman, a sister city of the capital, Khartoum.
The crash also caused damage to multiple homes in Omdurman’s Karrari district.
