Detroit Lions 2025 NFL draft: Meet the slot receiver they selected from Georgia
@Source: mlive.com
The Detroit Lions bookended their 2025 NFL draft by selecting Georgia receiver Dominic Lovett in the seventh round with the No. 244 overall pick. The 5-foot-10, 185-pounder had over 600 receiving yards each of his final three seasons in college totaling 13 touchdowns. His best season came as a sophomore at Missouri, when he caught 56 passes for 846 yards and three scores. Here are five things to know about Lovett: 1. Projects as a slot receiver/special teams player in NFL Lovett has a prototypical build of a slot receiver. He has struggled with drops in his career and catching the ball downfield. He’s at his best running after the catch, which is why most of his receptions are near the line of scrimmage. In the scouting report from NFL.com’s Lance Zierlein, Lovett gets down field quickly as a punt gunner, so there could be an opportunity for him to make an impact on special teams. The Bulldogs allowed only 23 yards in punt returns the two years Lovett, who ran a 4.40-second 40-yard dash at the combine, was on the team. 2. Eager to learn from one of the best The Lions have a deep receiver room and also added to it earlier in the draft, selecting Arkansas’ Isaac TeSlaa in the third round. They also have one of the best slot receivers in the game in Amon-Ra St. Brown. The path to playing time on offense won’t be easy for Lovett, but he’s welcoming the competition. “I feel like I can learn so much just from how he plays the game,” he said of St. Brown. “I feel like I could just pick his brain and be in his hip pocket, and he can show me throws to the NFL in the slot — different things, different techniques that he can give me,” Lovett expressed. “I feel like just being in his hip pocket and gaining that knowledge, but also gaining that knowledge from an outside receiver such as Jameson Williams, is a blessing.” 3. Will have several familiar faces to lean on Detroit also drafted two of his Georgia teammates this year, selecting offensive lineman Tate Ratledge in the second round and safety Dan Jackson earlier in the seventh round. Meanwhile, Lovett played with current Lions cornerback Ennis Rakestraw Jr. at Missouri. “I feel like that camaraderie and that connection that we carry from Georgia, we can bring that to Detroit and just make the locker room better — even though Detroit’s already on the uplift,” Lovett shared. “I feel like we can come in, help those guys make an impact, and just help those guys win.” 4. Quiet production in big games He was consistent in his two years at Georgia, recording at least one catch in every game. However, he never had a 100-yard performance and struggled against top competition. In the 2023 SEC title game against Alabama, Lovett caught two passes for 23 yards in a 27-24 loss. This year, he had three catches for zero yards in a 22-19 overtime win over Texas in the SEC championship. In Georgia’s playoff loss to Notre Dame, he hauled in three passes for 36 yards. 5. Former four-star recruit Lovett was a four-star recruit out of East St. Louis High in Illinois. He was ranked as the No. 331 overall prospect and No. 52 receiver in the 2021 class. He had 15 reported offers, including from Alabama, Georgia, Oregon, LSU and Penn State.
