'Does Lot Of Underarm..': England Star Reveals Reason Behind Shubman Gill's Purple Patch

Indian Test captain Shubman Gill led the visitors to a historic win at Edgbaston in the second Test between India and England with an incredible showing with the willow as the young batter stood tall against the English bowling attack to register scores of 269 and 161 in either innings to help the team level the series at 1-1. English batter Jos Buttler lauded his Gujarat Titans teammate and reflected on the Indian’s routine that has proven to help the star batter as he chases greatness. “Whatever he’s doing is working,” Buttler began on the ‘For The Love Of Cricket’ Podcast. “So I’d be like I want the same guy to give me throwdowns, want to do the same routine that I did,” he added. “Having played a little bit with him in the IPL, he does a lot of basic drills and does a lot of underarm drills, just grooving his shape” the Englishman revealed. “You’d think why would a Test cricketer be doing underarm drills but it’s just the muscle memory, moving into the right positions, hitting the ball late, that’s something he talks about a lot and practices a lot,” the 34-year-old said. “Hit the ball to the ground and let the ball come to him, which is a trait of all the best players. He’ll be doing lot of those kind of drills,” Buttler opened up. Gill smashed multiple records in the milestone game at Birmingham, and will have his eyes set on the great Don Bradman’s record of 974 runs, the most in a single bilateral Test series, as the team moves to the Lord’s for the third test of the series. “We hope as England fans that he doesn’t go on and break more records. We need to find answers to get him out,” Buttler said from an English perspective. “As a batter when you’re in that space you feel untouchable. You want to keep that momentum and energy on your side. Stay in that bubble,” he added. Buttler also touched up on the influence Gill’s father has had on his ward’s growth and development ever since a very young age and backed for the trend to continue as Gill goes chasing further milestones. “His dad has been quite influential and been a coach of his while growing up so I’m sure he’s got a couple of phone calls from him saying keep playing. He’ll be someone who he’ll be turning to and leaning on for his game,” Buttler concluded.
