Donald Trump visit to Scotland 'in doubt' as US President opens up on state visit to UK

Donald Trump's trip to Scotland this summer is in doubt after the US President suggested he may visit Windsor Castle instead . The Republican leader had been expected to meet with King Charles at either Balmoral or Dumfries House in Ayrshire - two royal properties which are both close to Trump International golf resorts. Trump has now indicated he will spend time with the Royal Family at Windsor Castle in September as part of a state visit to the UK. It was widely reported the US President would make a trip to Aberdeenshire this year to formally open the second golf course at his Menie Estate in Aberdeenshie. It is not yet known if the opening will now coincide with Trump's September visit to the south of England. The UK Government is said to have presented multiple options to the White House, with proposals for June, July and August visits involving the Royal family suggested and declined. The president last visited his two Scottish golf courses in May 2023 - his first since 2019. The former US president arrived at the resort in South Ayrshire after flying in to Prestwick Airport. Staff waved hats which said "we make Turnberry great again" as they greeted him Tump was previously feted with a grand state visit to Britain, hosted by the late Queen in 2019, during his first presidency. Speaking to reporters in the Oval Office on Thursday, he said he did not “know how it can be bigger than the last one” but “they say it’s going to be even more important”. Asked whether he would be meeting the King in September, the President said: “I was invited by the King and the country – great country. “They’re going to do a second, as you know, a second fest… that’s what it is: a fest, and it’s beautiful, and it’s the first time it’s ever happened to one person. “And the reason is we have two separate terms, and it’s an honour… I’m a friend of Charles, I have great respect for King Charles and the family, William, we have really just a great respect for the family. “And I think they’re setting a date for September.” Asked whether he thought it would be a smaller event than last time, he replied: “I don’t know how it can be bigger than the last one. “The last one was, as you know, incredible. But they say it’s going to be even more important, so it’s a great honour to be so chosen.” Precedent for second-term US presidents who have already made a state visit is usually tea or lunch with the monarch at Windsor Castle, as was the case for George W Bush and Barack Obama.
