England rugby star Joe Marler 'signs up for Celebrity Traitors' just weeks before filming begins

A brand new contestant for Celebrity Traitors has been revealed, not long before the show begins filming. The star-studded spinoff of the hit BBC series was announced during the Edinburgh Television Festival back in August, with celebs heading down to Ardross Castle in the Scottish Highlands to play the same classic game of deception as the original - and filming is set to begin next month. Now, Rugby Union pro Joe Marler has been revealed as the latest big name to join the cast, with plenty of other stars also rumoured to be involved. Joe, 34, has had some very memorable TV appearances, including The Wheel and Richard Osman’s House of Games, and retired from the England national team last November leaving plenty of time to commit to Celebrity Traitors. A source told The Sun that Joe has “officially signed his contract” for the spinoff of The Traitors, and “can’t wait to get stuck in.” They added that he’s keen for “a fresh challenge” after stepping away from pro rugby, and shared: “Joe is a huge fan of The Traitors and the BBC loved him when they met him for an interview for the show. He says he’s got his game plan all mapped out and thinks he can go all the way.” Representatives for the BBC have been contacted for comment. Host Claudia Winkleman will return for the first season of the new show, and has remained tight-lipped about which celebs will be joining her. When quizzed by Radio Times, however, she hinted that all things were possible - including having a showbiz pal sign up. "I haven’t vetoed anyone, but I think it would be hard if a great friend did it,” she said. Meanwhile, show producer Kate Phillips has suggested that some major names would be on the roster, coming from a variety of different backgrounds. She enthused: "The people we've spoken to, presenters, actors, experts - they all think they can play the game. That's the joy of the format. “I'm really looking forward to celebrities making huge mistakes and falling on their swords. I think it will be great fun." Celebrity Traitors suffered a huge knock last month when Daisy May Cooper and her brother Charlie pulled out of the show just weeks before they were due to begin filming. A source close to Daisy said that the This Country star and her sibling quit the show due to their need to stay with their young families. Daisy is mum to baby Benji, Pip, six, and Jack, three, while Charlie has two children with his wife Leighanne. A source said: “It’s caused producers a real headache as it’s so close to filming. "They’d banked on Daisy and Charlie being TV gold so it’s disappointing they won’t be a part of the first Celebrity Traitors. They’re hilarious and brilliant on telly together - plus being brother and sister would have brought a really interesting element to the series.” Like this story?
