Eurovision fans are convinced that Celine Dion is set to appear at the competition’s grand final after making a ‘red herring’ cameo in the first semi-final. The legendary Canadian singer rose to fame in 1988, when she won the annual event in Dublin for Switzerland in Dublin with her song Ne Partez Pas Sans Moi. Embedding herself in Eurovision folklore forever, fans have wanted My Heart Will Go On singer Celine to make an appearance for nearly 40 years. With Switzerland only getting their second win last year, thanks to Nemo, Eurovision fanatics were hopeful Celine would appear at St Jakobshalle, located in Basel. Prior to Tuesday night’s (May 13) semi-final, Swiss broadcaster SRG SSR confirmed it was still in ‘close contact’ with Celine amid speculation she would perform during the final. As fans waited to see which 10 of the 15 acts who performed would make it through , Celine appeared in a video played to deliver a surprise message. Speaking in English and French, Celine said: “It’s a country that believed in me and gave me the chance to be part of something so extraordinary, winning the Eurovision Song Contest for Switzerland in 1988. “(It) was a life changing moment for me, and I’m so thankful for everyone who supported me.” She added: “I'd love nothing more than to be with you. Switzerland will forever hold a special place in my heart. It's the country that believed in me and gave me the chance to be part of something so extraordinary." Despite appearing to rule out showing up later in the week, Eurovision fans rushed to X, previously known as Twitter , to speculate on what they think is really happening. @eurobvision said: “Is there any chance the Celine Dion video is a red herring and she may still appear in person during the final?” @EHistories added: “It makes no sense to show that message in the semi not the final if she isn't coming.” @Shamrock_1982 wrote: “Céline fans right now wondering if Céline will appear on Saturday night, after her video message played at the semi finals.” @emge_12 posted: “Weird that the Celine Dion message is shown during the semi-final and not the final.” @beardedeurofan commented: “Would it be possible that Céline Dion could be doing a special appearance in the Grand Final? I still have hopes.” @ladyjazmana stated: “Thought they’d have saved CELINE DION for the grand final #Eurovision.” Celeine made her comeback at the 2024 Paris Olympics, having stepped away from touring in recent years, because of increasing health issues while living with stiff-person syndrome (SPS). The Eurovision final airs on Saturday, May 17, at 8pm and will be available to watch on BBC One and the BBC iPlayer.
