Film fans are marking the 13th anniversary of a much-adored young adult thriller that has captured hearts since its big screen debut on March 23, 2012. The dystopian drama, lauded by critics and audiences alike, springs from the pages of Suzanne Collins' 2008 novel, narrated by the 16 year old protagonist Katniss Everdeen, who resides in a future North American nation under the thumb of a tyrannical regime. Each year, this oppressive government selects a boy and girl from each of the twelve districts to partake in a gruesome, televised fight to the death. We're referring to none other than the blockbuster series, The Hunger Games. Helmed by Gary Ross, a director with four Oscar nods to his name, the film clinched the 2012 BAFTA Children's Award for Best Feature Film. Starring the Oscar-winning Jennifer Lawrence, whose portrayal of Katniss catapulted her to stardom, the movie features a stellar cast including Josh Hutcherson, Liam Hemsworth, and Stanley Tucci. The original movie spawned an entire saga comprising five films, with the second, third, and fourth chapters released in quick succession over three years. The latest addition graced cinemas in 2023, showcasing Rachel Zegler (Snow White) and Tom Blyth (Billy the Kid), reports Surrey Live . More than ten years on, the fervour for the inaugural film hasn't waned, with fans flocking to X, the successor to Twitter, to express their celebratory antics. One fan wrote: "I've been binge watching the whole franchise since morning." The initial quartet of films are presently available for streaming on Netflix and ITVX. However, The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, can be streamed on Amazon Prime Video. One X user was taken aback by the film's age, posting: "What do you mean 13 years it was yesterday for me!!!! I still know what seat, what movie theatre and what I was wearing that day!!!" Meanwhile, over at Rotten Tomatoes, movie buffs continue to share their thoughts. "Love it! My favourite dystopian movie ever," one individual recently commented. Another passionate fan declared: "BEST MOVIE EVER A MUST SEE SO GOOD OMG." The first four films of The Hunger Games franchise are streaming now on Netflix and ITVX.
