The pro cricket player, 47, suffered a near-fatal crash when the open-top vehicle he was driving flipped and he was dragged for 50 metres underneath the car face down on the track. He was airlifted to a hospital with severe facial and rib injuries and was said to be ‘lucky to be alive’. Freddie is now sharing his story after staying away from the spotlight for months as he recovered. Flintoff sees the star’s rise to becoming the world renowned cricketer he is, with clips showing him as a teenager and through his sporting years, as well as reflecting on the physical and mental scars he’s been left with after the crash. She adds: ‘As soon as someone says that’s impossible then that makes him fly. All of a sudden your life can change… like that.’ We’ve taken a look inside his family life and career as the documentary drops on Disney Plus. Who is Freddie Flintoff’s wife? Freddie has been married to Rachael Wools Flintoff since 2005. The couple married in 2005 (Picture: Tom Shaw/Getty Images) They wed at an upmarket hotel in Knightsbridge on March 5, but due to his work commitments weren’t able to have a honeymoon. Rachael works as a model and entrepreneur, and started her events company Strawberry Productions when she was 19 years old. The couple met in 2002 at the Edgbaston cricket ground where she was holding an event. In 2007, she told The Daily Mail: ‘He really wasn’t my type physically, because I always go for dark men, but I thought he was the funniest guy I had ever met. ‘He got hold of my mobile number and texted me a couple of times, and we met up for a drink, and I was pretty much bowled over by his charm.’ They’ve been together for more than 20 years and share two children together (Picture: David Fisher/REX/Shutterstock) In the Disney Plus documentary, Rachael recalls the moment she got the phone call and heard of her husband’s Top Gear crash. ‘I didn’t think much of it to begin with. It just kind of escalated very quick,’ she says, according to The Mirror. After an initial five-hour surgery he underwent to help recover his ‘hard tissue and soft tissue injuries, broken teeth, lost teeth and elements of the upper jaw bone that were also fractured and displaced,’ Rachael saw Freddie for the first time ‘bandaged up’. She says: ‘When I did see him, I walked in the room, and he was just in the bed, and he was bandaged up. Like his eyes, I’ve never seen someone so scared in their eyes. And he just stared at me, and I just think he was looking at me to know how bad he was. I didn’t, I just said, “It’s fine. You’re gonna be okay. I can’t believe how amazing you look”.’ She adds that she rung her children to tell them to be ‘as strong as you’ve ever been’ despite their dad looking ‘different’. She told them: ‘It’s gonna get better, but I don’t want you to look shocked and horrified, because that’s gonna knock him.’ Does Freddie Flintoff have children? Freddie and Rachael share four children together, with their eldest, Holly, born in 2004. The pair, pictured here with their eldest three children, welcomed their fourth in 2020 (Picture: Chris Hyde – CA/Cricket Australia via Getty Images/Getty Images) They then welcomed son Corey and another, Rocky, in 2008, and in 2020, announced they’d welcomed their fourth child, a baby boy named Preston. In 2016, Freddie spoke about how he loved spending time with his children and being a dad, telling The Sun: ‘When I was playing cricket, I lived in a world of sport, a very male environment. You step out of that and into TV and being a dad and you get to do things like baking with your kids and it’s great. ‘After I retired, it bothered me for a while and I resented retiring early but I’ve come full circle now. ‘I love doing the TV projects but I want to spend time at home too, while the kids are young and want me around. I get more of a kick out of being with them than anything else.’ Freddie retired from Test cricket in 2009 (Picture: AP Photo/Kirsty Wigglesworth) In the interview with the Mail, Rachael revealed that Freddie’s earlier commitments to cricket meant he didn’t see his then-newborn son for weeks. She said: ‘He loves the team, he’ll do anything for cricket – when we got married we didn’t have a honeymoon because he’d had an injury and needed to spend the time returning to fitness. ‘Last year he was out in Pakistan and didn’t even see his newborn son for weeks because he’s so committed to the team.’ She also called her daughter Holly ‘a complete daddy’s girl’, adding: ‘When Andrew’s around, I never get a look-in. ‘She misses him when he’s away, but she makes up for it by carrying around a photograph of him – when she has a tea party for her dolls, she puts the picture on a chair, so Daddy can be there too.’ Freddie has spoken about how he loves spending time with his kids (Picture: Disney Plus/PA Wire) What is Freddie Flintoff’s net worth? Freddie’s net worth is believed to be around £15,000,000, according to Celebrity Net Worth. He made his cricketing debut in 1998, becoming England’s Man of the Series in the 2005 Ashes and later serving as both captain and vice-captain before retiring from Test cricket in 2009. He’s since gone on to have partnerships with fashion brands and starred on the likes of I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here! and A League of Their Own, as well as a groundbreaking 2020 documentary titled Freddie Flintoff: Living With Bulimia. Among his numerous TV projects and several books, he recently fronted the ITV revival of Bullseye and presented Field of Dreams on the BBC. Top Gear was taken off air months after Freddie’s crash (Picture: BBC Studios/Vincent Dolman) What was Freddie Flintoff’s compensation settlement? Freddie reached a settlement with the BBC nearly a year after his Top Gear crash, with reports at the time stating the deal was worth £9,000,000 after he was forced to miss out on two years of earnings while he recovered. According to the BBC, the payout was not funded by the TV licence fee as BBC Studios is a commercial arm of the broadcaster. ‘BBC Studios has reached an agreement with Freddie that we believe supports his continued rehabilitation, return to work and future plans,’ a statement read. ‘We have sincerely apologised to Freddie and will continue to support him with his recovery.’ Months after the crash, following speculation over Top Gear’s future, the BBC announced it would be taken off air for the foreseeable future. The broadcaster confirmed it would be pausing production on the hit motoring series, co-presented by Take Me Out host Paddy McGuinness and automotive journalist Chris, as it was felt it would be ‘inappropriate’, adding there would be a health and safety review. Flintoff premieres exclusively on Disney Plus in the UK and Ireland from today, Friday, April 25. Got a story?
