The OFC Women’s Nations Cup and the Flying Fijians Test match against Scotland will go ahead as schedule at Suva’s HFC Bank Stadium on July 12.
This was announced yesterday by Fiji Football Association (Fiji FA) chief executive officer Mohammed Yusuf in a press conference in Suva yesterday.
Speaking to SUNsports, Yusuf said Fiji FA, Fiji Rugby Union and the Fiji Sports Council have come to an agreement after constructive discussions and careful planning.
“We have come to a win-win agreement,” he said.
“We thank Oceania Football Confederation for understanding and allowing us carry on with the schedule.”
He said Fiji FA had a zoom meeting with OFC to which Fiji FA was asked to draft an agreement.
Yusuf said the ground would be cleared by 9.30pm on Friday and the Council would re-mark the ground to be ready for Saturday’s Test match between Fiji and Scotland.
He revealed OFC agreed to this option, provided that the ground is fully match-ready for football on July 14, with no rugby markings or damages visible after the rugby match.
“Fiji FA will not be taken to task by OFC because they understand. The reality of the situation is that Fiji has only one international stadium and the need for Fiji Sports Council to facilitate the situation.
“By 6pm after the rugby match, we will move in again to then remove the rugby branding and marking to set the stage ready for the next OFC match.
“They will have 18 hours to do so thus it should be ready for the matches on Monday,” he said.
FRU general manager operations Sale Sorovaki said they sincerely thank Fiji FA and OFC for their great understanding and support.
“This historic match against Scotland means a lot to us, and we are happy to be hosting it; without affecting the football schedule.
“We thank Fiji FA for making this happen,” he said.
Council board chairman and acting chief executive officer Ratu Gilbert Vakalalabure thanked both parties for coming together.
“We will proceed with the events as scheduled; we appreciate the agreement both parties have made,” he said.
When asked about a solution if there was no agreement, Vakalalabure said: “We could move it to Lawaqa Park, but we don’t have the money.”
