Homeless, depression and Hollywood: Where 90s glamour models are now
@Source: belfastlive.co.uk
In today's world, it's not uncommon for admirers to slide into the DMs of striking Instagram models just for kicks. Contrast that with the early 2000s, when to get a quick glimpse of your crush, you had to physically buy a magazine from a store.
Back then, FHM, Loaded, Nuts, and Zoo were the go-to magazines, delivering a bevy of busty beauties who adorned the bedroom walls of young men across the country.
However, as the internet gained prominence and public perception towards glamour models shifted, the lads' mag scene began to wane, forcing their celebrated models to seek out new avenues. While some managed to navigate the transition successfully, others faced more challenging paths.
Here are the stories of the lads' mag ladies and where life took them next , reports the Mirror.....
Gail Porter
Initially known for her presentation work on Fully Booked and Top of the Pops, Gail soon became a beloved figure in lads' mags, openly talking about orgasms and famously having her nude posterior projected onto the Houses of Parliament for FHM magazine's top 100 sexiest women in 1999.
The Scottish celebrity married Toploader guitarist Dan Hipgrave in 2001 and gave birth to their daughter Honey the following year.
Despite what it looked like on the surface, she was secretly battling postnatal depression and, after her marriage broke down in 2005, she suffered from alopecia, which resulted in the loss of all her hair.
"It was absolutely terrifying, I didn't know what was going on," Gail would share later on.
"We didn't have any therapy, we just sat there. People were crying and acting quite strangely, obviously. I was drugged up to my eyeballs and found it all very distressing."
Gail relayed concerning past experiences.
Following a turbulent period, Gail, now aged 54, endured significant hardship in 2017 that led to bankruptcy and homelessness, which found her sleeping on Hampstead Heath's park bench.
"Those were the scariest nights of my life. There were lots of terrifying noises. I had no idea what they were. I was freezing and I didn't know who was coming for me," she recounted to The Sun about those harrowing times.
Gail attributed her spiral into financial difficulty to hair loss, explaining how it hampered her TV career: "Losing my hair was a big thing. I was OK with it and people around me would say it was fine but people stopped booking me for TV work," detailing further impact, "The jobs that were coming so freely during the nineties weren't there for me any more. By then I was renting a place and my savings started to dribble away."
Keeley Hazell, from Lewisham, credits the beginning of her ascent to fame to winning the Daily Star's Search for a Beach Babe contest at 17.
Renowned for her down-to-earth nature and quotes like: "If I'm swimming in a pool and my bikini pops off, I'm not bothered – I'll just carry on," Keeley has become a popular figure, with features in Loaded, Nuts, Zoo, and FHM, where she was humorously dubbed a Kentish melon farmer.
Reflecting on the zenith of her modelling career, Keeley Hazell shared: "I was travelling all the time, and financially my situation changed a lot. I was earning a lot of money. At the time you don't realise and I look back and think 'that was crazy.'"
Now 38, Keeley Hazell once reigned supreme as the glamour model with more sultry photoshoots than any of her peers, but she retired her bikini in 2009 when her income took a nosedive from £30,000 per shoot to just £1,000, as magazine sales dwindled.
However, Keeley didn't let this setback dampen her spirits. She smartly channelled her funds into acting classes in Los Angeles, which paid off when she landed roles in the critically acclaimed film Like Crazy, the British gangster movie St George's Day, and the blockbuster Horrible Bosses 2.
While working on Horrible Bosses, Keeley crossed paths with actor Jason Sudeikis, who at the time was in a relationship with actress and director Olivia Wilde. Fast forward to 2020, and Keeley joined the cast of the sports comedy-drama Ted Lasso, remaining until the show's conclusion and even co-writing an episode.
Keeley found herself reconnecting with her Horrible Bosses colleague, Jason, now 49, as he portrayed the character Ted. The pair were romantically involved from 2021 to 2022.
On Instagram, Keeley Hazell embraces her past with a touch of humour in her bio, stating: 'Livin' my breast life', yet she also highlights her current vocation as 'writer'. Fans can anticipate her first memoir, titled Everyone's Seen My T**s, set for release on July 15, 2025.
Leilani Dowding, more than just a pretty face with a Miss Great Britain title under her belt, also boasts of an economics degree from the University of London and became a popular figure in lad mags. She turned her back on UK fame for a life in LA during the mid-noughties, where she ultimately wed Raquel Welch's former spouse and restaurant tycoon Richie Palmer.
Despite their shared affection, a significant 26-year age gap caused friction, particularly regarding family plans. They divorced over differing stances on having children.
When facing charges of chasing wealth, Leilani stood firm on VH1's Tough Love Miami: "I was the one who wanted to get divorced from my ex. He just assumed I would want something from it and offered me a huge settlement. Because it was my choice, I didn't ask for anything."
She tackled stereotypes directly: "Because he is a lot older, people assume that yes, I was a gold digger. My ex husband was amazing and such a gentlemen.
"But he didn't want kids and I did. That is why we didn't work out. We are still friends and if he ever thought I was just out for money, he would probably never speak to me again."
At 45, Leilani joined The Real Housewives of Cheshire's ninth series, taking up the spot left by original cast member Lauren Simon. However, after only one season, she confirmed her exit from the ITVBe show.
Six years after leaving The Real Housewives of Cheshire, the show celebrated its 10th anniversary by bringing back several original cast members, including Tanya Bardsley, Leanne Brown, Dawn Ward, and Magali Gorre. Hanna Kinsella, Ester Dee, and Nermina Pieters-Mekic also joined the lineup.
However, Leilani Dowding, a former glamour model and ex-cast member, took to social media to reveal she was not invited back.
Leilani, who is engaged to The Cult's Billy Duffy, believes her absence may be due to her history of making provocative comments on social media. In a video post, she stated: "A few of my friends and some people I don't know who follow me or the show have asked if I'll be going back on The Real Housewives of Cheshire as it's the tenth anniversary and they're bringing back a lot of the previous cast members. But no, I haven't been asked.
"It's possible because I've been very outspoken about political and social things that no-one on mainstream TV should ever talk about. Also, I think it's more likely because there would be no storyline for me. I live south of Cheshire now, just a little bit, south of the border. I haven't spoken to or hung out with any of the women since I left the show."
The former nurse turned reporter for Richard and Judy, Abi Titmuss, saw her career take a hit in 2004 when she was let go from the show following the leak of a sex tape involving herself, John Leslie, and model Aisha Abubakar.
Abi then left the world of modelling to pursue acting, studying at the prestigious Central School of Speech and Drama. Her efforts paid off when she secured a role on BBC's Casualty in 2012.
Her acting career took her across the pond where she landed the part of Nurse Jackie in the popular American soap Days of Our Lives and found love with co-star Ari Welkom.
On Loose Women in January 2015, Abi announced her transformation into Abigail Evelyn, distancing herself from her glamour modelling roots.
She married Ari in May 2017, celebrating their union while expecting their first child at 21 weeks pregnant. "I met Ari when I was 38 and got pregnant naturally at 40," she shared with the Loose Women panel.
Kelly Brook, known for her stunning figure, once held the title of FHM's Sexiest Woman in the World.
Kelly burst onto the scene as a glamour model in 1997, becoming a beloved Page 3 girl and a regular feature in FHM's Sexiest countdown until the magazine ceased publication in 2015.
Now aged 45, Kelly had an ill-fated attempt at presenting the Big Breakfast in 1999, which ended abruptly after just a few months amid reports that she struggled with pronouncing larger words.
Kelly has certainly bounced back from her past challenges – after hosting Celebrity Love Island and a high-profile engagement to actor Billy Zane, although their romance ultimately ended in 2008.
Her personal life faced further trials when, in 2011, Kelly suffered immense sorrow from a miscarriage five months into her pregnancy with then-boyfriend, former rugby star Thom Evans, and faced additional loss later the same year.
The couple's bond couldn't survive the hardship, leading to Thom's move to Los Angeles to pursue his modelling career and ruling out a future together. "When I brought up the subject of marriage and children, the colour drained from his face," she disclosed in her autobiography, adding, "He wanted to focus on his 'new life' in LA - a wife and children would slow him down. He didn't want to be in a relationship anymore. It was obvious."
Today, she resides in Kent with her model spouse Jeremy, delighting listeners as the drive time presenter on Heart London.
Moreover, Kelly has made remarkable strides in her health journey in recent years, shedding two stone and downsizing four dress sizes. As an enthusiastic SlimFast ambassador, she attributes this noteworthy weight management achievement to the regimen, proudly slimming down from a size 16 to a lean size 12.
Whilst chatting to the Mirror about her weight journey throughout the 2010s, she confided: "I wasn't feeling happy in my body. I wanted to lose weight, and now I've lost it. I'm maintaining it and feel really good."
