God damned Brits. Funnily enough, I came across this Wiki page recently with a citation from 1865 that in the US, storage compartments at the front or rear of a carriage were referred to as boots. It seems that when cars came in, Americans started calling them trunks, Brits continued to use the older term. And if it's weird to call the engine cover the bonnet, why does it make sense to refer to it as a different head covering?
