The Fiji Airways Fiji men’s rugby sevens team needs to make changes in their attacking flair before the Hong Kong Sevens tournament Speaking to SUNsports in Labasa on Thursday, sevens maestro Waisale Serevi said if they are able to do the changes, then he is confident that Fiji could break that winless jinx. The last time Fiji won the Hong Kong tournament was in 2019. This year’s tournament is from March 28-30. He said the coaching leadership of Osea Kolinisau has helped Fiji reached this far but there is more to be done. Serevi highlighted the national team still lacks the creative attacking flair, which the past Fiji 7s teams were renowned for. “They (Fiji) are struggling with the way they are playing at the moment,” he said. He said the current crop of players (national sevens team) must plan a new brand of attacking rugby to outsmart the oppositions. “Other teams have caught up with us and have closed the gap. That is why teams like Uruguay are upsetting us. “I have watched other teams in the series who have changed their game plan to counter the opposition (depending on who they are playing against),” the 56-year-old said. Serevi captained Fiji to win the Rugby World Cup Sevens title in 1997 and 2005. He also coached Fiji to their first HSBC Sevens Series win in 2005/06. “We cannot play the way we’ve been performing in the last two tournaments and we must come up with a lethal attacking plan.” Serevi has suggested to the players and the coaching panel to set some goals in their attack and defence. “Small goals like when to turnover possession or when to keep the ball. And also how to manage the game is something that the players need to understand. Playing aimlessly is not what Fiji is known for,” he said. Serevi reiterated that our players are the fittest in the series. “We train for one month and that is very intense so from my understanding we are the fittest team. But the problem is on our playing style, which has become predictable and the need to bring about the necessary changes,” he added. Feedback: sampras.anand@fijisun.com.fj
