Latest injury means San Diego FC will be without 5 regulars for Sunday’s match

When it comes to a fighting spirit, the Modelo guy’s got nothing on San Diego FC. Coach Mikey Varas has instilled resilience in the Major League Soccer expansion club, a trait that has served it well during a 2-0-2 start to the season. “In life, no matter how talented or how you up you are, if you have a fighting team spirit and an underdog mentality, you always give yourself a chance,” Varas explained Friday. “At the end of the day, we’re going to have good games and bad games, technically and tactically, because that’s life. “But what should be non-negotiable is our fight and having that spirit of being humble, being respectful of the game and the opponent and of our community, and making sure we’re always giving a huge effort.” SDFC needs that fight more than ever. The club will be without five regulars on Sunday, when it travels to Texas for a meeting with Austin FC. Forward Marcus Ingvartsen will miss weeks, if not longer, as he recovers from what the team says is a lower-body injury. Ingvartsen joins winger Hirving “Chucky” Lozano (leg) and defender Andres Reyes (leg) on the injured list; all three will remain at home this weekend. SDFC is also missing midfielder Anibal Godoy, who helped lead Colombia past the United States in Thursday’s Concacaf Nations League semifinals, and defender Paddy McNair, who captained Northern Ireland in Friday’s 1-1 tie with Switzerland as part of an international friendly. Lozano, a winger and the centerpiece of SDFC’s inaugural club, suffered an apparent hamstring injury in the first half of the team’s March 1 home opener against St. Louis City SC. He is back on the practice field but limited in what he can do, Varas said. Reyes, a veteran acquired from the New York Red Bulls before the season, has yet to make his San Diego debut. Ingvartsen was injured just before halftime of last week’s 1-1 draw with Columbus. He stayed down on the field for a few long moments before being met by team trainers. He left the field under his own power. Onni Valakari replaced him to start the second half, and ended up scoring SDFC’s first-ever goal at Snapdragon Stadium. Reports indicate Ingvartsen could miss between 10 and 12 weeks. Varas said Friday that Ingvartsen “won’t be back anytime in the early season.” Sunday’s match should provide a chance for SDFC’s backups to shine. Among the players likely to see significant time is Alex Mighten, a 22-year-old Brit who was born in Connecticut while his father, Eddie, was working as a soccer analyst for ESPN. Mighten came up through the Nottingham Forest academy in England. He spent last season on loan with FC Nordsjælland, a Danish team that, like SDFC, is part of the Right to Dream system. While Mighten noted that the starting 11 is Varas’ decision and not his, he acknowledged that Sunday could be a chance to make his mark. “When we’ve got five players missing,” he said, “it’s an opportunity for anyone.”
