Liverpool Tasked With 'Big Responsibility' Of Winning Record 20th Premier League Title At Anfield, Says Arne Slot

It’s not just a formality, but rather a ‘big responsibility’ for Liverpool to win the Premier League title at home in front of the Anfield faithful, said the Reds boss, Arne Slot.
All that stands between Liverpool and their record-equalling 20th Premier League title is one mere point and a dismal Tottenham Hotspur. If Slot’s men just avoid defeat on Sunday, then history will be made.
Despite the strong showcases over the past decade, Liverpool has managed to snatch only one PL title, back in 2020, but has fallen victim in the penultimate step to Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City multiple times.
On top of it all, the Reds’ last title win came across slightly anti-climactic, coming during the COVID-19 pandemic in an empty Anfield where the trophy was presented.
For Slot, who has taken over the talisman Jurgen Klopp’s role in Liverpool since this past summer, it’s almost a rite of passage to present a packed Anfield with PL glory yet again.
Or to put it in his own words, ‘a big responsibility.’
“It’s a big responsibility. We are aware that the last time this club won the league was during the COVID-19 pandemic. So everybody is looking forward to Sunday,” Slot told reporters on Friday.
“We know there’s still a job to do. We need at least one point. Our fans know as well. When they come to the stadium, they have to support us in the best possible way, as they have done all season.
“It’s a nice game to look forward to, but also a responsibility we have for Sunday.”
A 20th league title would see Liverpool equal Manchester United’s record, and it looks well placed to go on to set a new benchmark before its great rival gets back into contention at the top of English soccer.
It was Liverpool that once held the record of 18 titles, but two decades of dominance for United under former manager Alex Ferguson saw the club win 13 league crowns from 1993-2013. Liverpool didn’t win any titles in that time and ended a 30-year wait to be champions in 2020.
And now, in his first season since replacing the beloved Jurgen Klopp, former Feyenoord boss Slot will become the 12th manager to win the Premier League and the first Dutchman.
