Mathys Tel tipped for Tottenham stardom after 'outgrowing' old club at 14 years old

A seven-minute cameo from the bench in the UEFA Youth League was enough to convince Stade Rennes staff that one 14-year-old gem would quickly outgrow the club. His name? Mathys Tel. Following a drastic late U-turn, the teenage Frenchman joined Tottenham on an initial loan deal from Bayern Munich on transfer deadline day which also includes a £45million option to make the transfer permanent this summer. However, despite the thrill of Ange Poscteoglou, Daniel Levy and Johan Lange successfully executing the last-gasp agreement ahead of fellow Premier League rivals, the highly-rated attacker has netted just once in six appearances to date. Tel's former Rennes U19 coach Romain Ferrer is adamant the red-hot teenager will come good, as he's seen the superstar potential with his very own eyes. Ferrer revealed ahead of Spurs' trip to Fulham following Thursday's 3-1 Europa League triumph over AZ Alkmaar : "Mathys' first official match with the Stade Rennes academy was a Youth League match against Inter Milan. "He was the youngest player, just 14 and there were players who were five years older than him. Despite all of that, he entered the match without fear with character and was immediately efficient, it was just so impressive. "We realised that he was going to join a very big team and that Rennes was a springboard and a club that was going to become too small for him. This has since proven true, first with Bayern and now Tottenham." Tel, who captained France to U17 European Championships glory in 2022 before later clinching a £24m move to Bayern, played in the same Rennes youth side as Brighton's Georginio Rutter and Chelsea midfielder Lesley Ugochukwu. While there were no questions about his star quality and promise, Ferrer also swiftly established Tel had the attitude to match. He claims the versatile forward will have no qualms knocking on Postecoglou's door to seek guidance. Ferrer continued: "I have excellent memories of our collaboration, Mathys is a very respectful boy, you can feel a really good education from his family. "He is hardworking, he had really high goals despite his young age and he did everything he could to achieve them. "He showed great maturity despite his age, he was always very respectful and didn't hesitate to ask for advice. He was very attentive to the coaches' advice and constantly wanted to improve." Tel's versatility - he can also play out wide - has arguably halted his development as a centre-forward, his preferred position. But Ferrer is confident that with good coaching and regular minutes, he will still live up to his billing as one of the best young attacking prospects in world football. He added: "When you're at a big club with strong objectives, it's difficult to get significant playing time. Mathys played several positions for me, too, even midfield and had very strong qualities but we had to make him work in areas that he'd not explored enough. "He can play multiple roles but off-centre, for his age, seems the most appropriate at this time. I'm still sure he's going to be a huge player."
