Ministry Seeks Eviction Delay for Kilikali Residents
@Source: fijisun.com.fj
Minister for Housing and Local Government Maciu Nalumisa has requested the RB Patel Group Limited to extend the eviction deadline for residents at Kilikali settlement in Nasinu. “The Ministry officials have met with RB Patel Group Limited and requested an extension to the deadline to complete the survey and explore alternative solutions for the families,” Mr Nalumisa said. Sixty households have been slapped with the May 30 eviction deadline. A socio-economic survey conducted by the Ministry last week assessed 61 of 69 households, with results to be formally submitted to RB Patel Group Limited. Last week, this masthead interviewed residents of the Kilikali settlement, who expressed concerns about having nowhere to go after living there for many years. The eviction notice, issued by Sherani & Co. Solicitors on behalf of RB Patel Group Limited, declared residents’ occupation as “unlawful and illegal.” Initial survey findings by the Ministry revealed some families are considering returning to their villages, while others are exploring relocation options with close by iTaukei landowners. Majority of the families lack financial means for relocation. Residents are encouraged to remain in contact with the Ministry and to reach out with any questions or concerns. The Ministry acknowledged residents’ distress, particularly those who have lived in Kilikali for decades, and pledged to ensure “families are relocated with dignity, security, and support.” The land, under Certificate of Title No. 46916, is earmarked for commercial development, with the matter currently before the High Court. The Ministry will provide updates as the situation progresses. Feedback: kaneta.naimatau@fijisun.com.fj
