Mo Salah suffers new setback hours after Liverpool win Premier League title
@Source: mirror.co.uk
Liverpool star Mo Salah is no longer leading the race to win the European Golden Shoe. Salah, 32, has enjoyed arguably his best ever season this term, scoring 28 goals and registering 18 assists in the Premier League alone. The Egyptian's scintillation form has meant that he's been top of the leaderboard, which takes into account the most goals scored in a European domestic league, for much of the campaign. But now Salah has been overtaken hours after Liverpool won the Premier League title, despite him scoring in Sunday's crowning 5-1 victory at home to Tottenham . Sporting Lisbon striker Viktor Gyokeres is the new frontrunner after netting four goals against Boavista on Sunday night. After bagging his seventh hat-trick of the season, Gyokeres added a fourth goal in stoppage time, taking his tally to 38 goals in 30 league games in Portugal's top flight. That kind of output has put him on the radar of a number of European giants, including Manchester United , Arsenal , Chelsea and Barcelona . Gyokeres, 26, has a release clause of €100million (£83m) and could join a new club as the reigning Golden Shoe winner. The Sweden international is on course to take Harry Kane's crown with 57 points to his name. Salah is narrowly behind on 56, despite scoring 10 fewer league goals than Gyokeres. That's because goals which are scored in the Premier League are considered more valuable than those scored in the Primeira Liga. The plus side for Salah is that Gyokeres only has three more league games to add to his tally, including a title decider away to Benfica on Sunday, May 10. Liverpool, on the other hand, have four left to play. But Salah isn't the only man on Gyokeres' tail. Barcelona striker Robert Lewandowski , who's currently injured, sits third with 50 points while England captain Kane and Atalanta hotshot Mateo Retegui are both on 48. Will Mo Salah win the European Golden Shoe? Give us your prediction in the comments section . Salah has never won the Golden Shoe before, just like the Ballon d'Or which he's also no longer the favourite to win. Liverpool's lack of success outside of the Premier League coupled with Barcelona's trophy-laden start to 2025 have led to ex-Leeds winger Raphinha being installed as the frontrunner for this year's prestigious award. It'll still go down as an historic season for Salah, who can break the record for the mosts assists in a single Premier League campaign if he registers three more between now and May 25, having already made history on Sunday. The 32-year-old became the Premier League's top-scoring foreign player, surpassing Manchester City legend Sergio Aguero by scoring his 185th goal.
