NASCAR Starlet Connor Zilisch Reflects on Scary Watkins Glen Fall
@Source: newsweek.com
More than a week after taking a brutal fall, NASCAR driver Connor Zilisch addressed his dramatic moment in victory lane at Watkins Glen.Zilisch took the win at The Glen on Saturday, Aug. 9, adding another impressive win to the 19-year-old's impressive resume.He has won six races on the season and emerged as one of the brightest young drivers in America.As he climbed out of his car in victory lane to celebrate and stood on top of the car, he fell and hit the back of his head on the ground.The incident led to a massive wave of concerns, but he was released from the hospital the same day.He ended up with a broken collarbone, leading to a procedure days later that added a plate and screws to his collarbone to help it heal.Videos of the incident went viral on social media, and while Zilisch wishes the sport was getting attention for the racing, he understands the nature of social media."I didn't expect, you know, I think that video probably has been viewed over a hundred million times, and to think that that's what is gonna get a hundred million views in our sport kind of sucks, but you know, those are the things that go viral and in the world we live in."So, as much as I hate that, you know, that's what our sport is getting eyeballs for. That's why I'm on ABC World News, and that's why I'm on Jimmy Kimmel. You know, it's part of it."I got the wrong eyeballs on NASCAR, but glad it wasn't any worse. Glad my leg is okay. First of all, my head from the hit I took. You know, it could have been much worse."So yes, I can laugh at it now, but I definitely will remember that race forever for probably the wrong reason."Zillisch is getting back in the No. 88 JR Motorsports Chevrolet on Friday for Friday's NASCAR Xfinity Series race at Daytona International Speedway.He did not miss a race on the Xfinity calendar. Earlier in the season, he missed a race for a back injury.The teenage star is in first place for the regular season championship, sporting a seven-point lead over teammate Justin Allgaier.There are three races left in the Xfinity Series regular season, after which this year's playoffs will start.For more NASCAR news, head on over to Newsweek Sports.
