AUGUSTA – In loving memory of Ruby Poulin, a life of strength, love, and grace.
It is with heavy hearts and profound love that we announce the passing of our cherished mother and memere, Ruby Poulin, a woman whose life was a testament to resilience, devotion, and boundless love. Ruby passed away unexpectedly on July 21, 2025, surrounded by family and love.
Born on Sept. 15, 1937 in the heart of Eskasoni First Nation, Nova Scotia, Canada, Ruby carried within her the rich and beautiful traditions of her Mi’kmaq heritage, which she honored through her gentle spirit, her strength, and her fierce dedication to her family. She was the beloved daughter of Michael R. and Mary Bella (Herney) Denny.
A proud survivor of the Shubenacadie Residential School, Ruby’s life journey was not an easy one, yet she carried herself with a quiet, unwavering dignity. In surviving what was meant to break her, she became the living embodiment of resilience, grace, and hope for generations to come.
Ruby’s journey brought her to a new life across the border, where she built a home filled with warmth, kindness, and laughter alongside her beloved husband, Gerard Poulin. Together, they cultivated a love that withstood the tests of time, rooted in faith, humor, and unwavering commitment.
Their family blossomed into a beautiful legacy: four children, Deborah Coulombe and her husband Andrew Coulombe of Augusta, Paul Poulin of Augusta, Jeanette Chartier and her husband Rick Chartier of Gardiner, and Mary Poulin of Waterville, each carrying forward the strength and tenderness their mother instilled in them. Ruby’s love knew no bounds, and her family continued to grow with grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren, all of whom were her pride, her joy, and her purpose. To each of them, she was more than “Memere”, she was a safe place, a guiding light, and the heart of the family.
Ruby’s presence was a quiet kind of magic. She had a way of making you feel seen, heard, and deeply loved, whether through her soft-spoken words, her knowing smile, or the simple warmth of her hand in yours. Her stories, her traditions, her laughter, and her unwavering strength have woven themselves into the very fabric of our lives.
Though we mourn her loss deeply, we celebrate the incredible life she lived, a life marked by perseverance, deep faith, gentle humor, and an extraordinary capacity for love. Ruby leaves behind not only her family but also a legacy of survival, compassion, and cultural pride that will continue to inspire all who follow her.
As we say goodbye, we find comfort knowing that Ruby’s spirit is now free, reunited with ancestors, embraced by the land and the people who came before her, and forever watching over those she so dearly loved.
Ruby was predeceased by her siblings Irene Herney, Leona Denny, Matthew Denny, Mary Rita Denny, Jake Denny, Jessie Denny, and Euphemia “Bea” Miller.
She is survived by her sister, Georgina Doucette, with whom she shared a deep and loving bond.
The family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to the staff at Gray Birch in Augusta and MaineGeneral Medical Center for the kindness and compassion they showed Ruby in her final days.
Wela’lin, Memere. Thank you for your love, your courage, and your light. Your story lives on in all of us.
At her request, there will be no public visiting hours. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday, Aug. 5 at 10 a.m. at St. Augustine Catholic Church, Northern Ave., Augusta. Burial will follow in Holy Family Cemetery, Townsend Road, Augusta.
