New Delhi: The Opposition on Tuesday questioned the government in Rajya Sabha over the reasons behind India's “abrupt ceasefire" after it launched Operation Sindoor against Pakistan in response to the Pahalgam terror attack. Leading the charge, Upper House Leader of the Opposition Mallikarjun Kharge said Union home minister Amit Shah must take responsibility for the "security lapse" that led to the Pahalgam terror attack. "Whosoever is responsible should quit," he said. The Opposition also sought clarification from the Modi government over US President Donald Trump’s repeated statements that he brokered the ceasefire between India and Pakistan. Demanding that accountability be fixed, Kharge cited Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant-Governor Manoj Sinha's statement admitting to the security lapses that led to the terror attack. He questioned the silence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi on US President Trump's repeated claims of mediation and brokering a ceasefire with Pakistan. Sharpening his attack against the government, Kharge asked whether India had accepted a third-party mediation with Pakistan. He also asked why India did not object to economic packages for Pakistan by the World Bank and the IMF. The Congress president asked whether the operation against Pakistan was halted on the threat of trade, as claimed by the US President repeatedly. He said the government should release a report on the Pahalgam terror attack, as was done after the Kargil war. Taking a jibe at Modi's unscheduled visit to Pakistan in 2015, Kharge said foreign policy is not "event-baazi", urging the government to formulate a proper policy. "Here we (the Congress) criticise (Pakistan) and there you go to their daawat and embrace them," Kharge said, using the term "Vishwa Guru" without naming the PM. He alleged that the government has not drawn any lessons from the repeated terror attacks that have taken place in Kashmir and other parts of the country. Posing direct questions to Shah, the Rajya Sabha LoP said, "I would like to ask the home minister, who is responsible for this? Vacate your post if you are. If not, what action is the PM taking?" Citing media reports, the Congress president said even as the Prime Minister was silent, three key security officials made important disclosures. Referring to reports quoting Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) Gen. Anil Chauhan in Singapore saying "tactical mistakes were made during the first two days of the operation", Mr Kharge sought to know the government's views regarding the admission. He further cited a report quoting the defence attaché in Indonesia as saying that political constraints hampered military decision-making. The Congress president said if no Indian fighter jet has been downed, the Prime Minister should tell the country. Kharge asked if there was any intelligence alert about the terror attack in Pahalgam, as Modi cancelled his scheduled visit to Kashmir three days before the attack. During the special debate, the Rajya Sabha also witnessed heated exchanges between the Opposition and Treasury benches after Leader of the House J.P. Nadda made some objectionable remarks against Kharge that he later withdrew and apologised for. Objecting to the PM’s absence from Parliament during the debate, DMK’s T. Shiva questioned Modi's commitment to parliamentary democracy. He also criticised Modi's track record of parliamentary attendance, noting that the PM was absent during previous crucial debates, including discussions on the Manipur situation. TMC MP Sagarika Ghose said terrorists entered Pahalgam only because of negligence on the government’s part and administrative failure in handling border security. She also questioned the government's diplomatic approach, particularly India's participation in cricket matches with Pakistan despite tensions. "Sindoor does not flow in your veins, only politics flows in your veins. If sindoor would have flowed in the Prime Minister's veins, such an incident would not have happened," said the TMC MP. Earlier, former foreign secretary and nominated member Harsh Vardhan Shringla said the precision strikes eliminated over 100 terrorists during Operation Sindoor. He noted that groupings like QUAD and Brics and even countries like Saudi Arabia spoke in favour of India. Shringla said a few members quoted statements from foreign media, but it is India’s narrative that should matter to us and not that of any other country.
