Two Osoyoos teens took home some shiny hardware from a Kelowna jiujitsu tournament over the weekend.
On Saturday, John Bourne earned double gold at the King of the Mat competition organized by BC Absolute Challenge and Pacific Top Team Tournaments.
Keiren Butt also earned double silver in the same division; juvenile white belt. They stood side-by-side on the podium.
"I'm happy, but I'm not surprised at the outcomes with these young gentlemen because of the hard work that they put in," said Tyler VanKill, the boys head coach.
VanKill has travelled all over the world fighting professionally, before recently opening Osoyoos' South Okanagan Combat Academy in December. The coach said martial arts can teach kids confidence in many areas of their lives.
"They're just super stoked. Super, super stoked," VanKill said of the teens' reactions.
"Keiren not only stepped up in experience, because we've been training not that long, he has to go against kids much bigger than him, and he beat that kid and earned second competing against people much bigger than him.
"And then, John; the same thing [...] the dedication that kid puts in is so amazing."
It's not the first time the boys competed; SOCA also placed third overall in Merritt's Grappling Industries tournament in May.
VanKill said the wins are a testament to his club's diligence.
"They're wonderful young gentlemen who just are respectful. They show up, they listen, they're good kids to be around. They bring a great culture to the gym of just jovial youth that also work hard," he said.
"Martial arts and kids, in my opinion, go hand in hand, because it teaches them confidence and so many different skills that can transfer over to later in life.
"That confidence that you have can help you in job interviews and just so many different things."
Now, SOCA is settling into a new facility at 800 Golf Course Dr., with a packed schedule.
VanKill said the fast popularity of the club shows the need in Osoyoos and the greater Okanagan.
