Owner Baffled As She Comes Home, Only To Discover Cat Has Turned Green
@Source: newsweek.com
A pet owner sparked confusion online after revealing her cat had turned a decidedly unusual shade of green.Claire, a 27-year-old woman from Oregon, took to TikTok to reveal what had happened to her four-legged feline companion Tutti.In a video posted to TikTok with the on screen caption "Got home and my cat is green." On the clip, which can be watched here, Claire can be heard saying: "Tutti, why are you green?"The footage was posted online by Claire alongside a comment that reads "Just another day in my life. What did he get into?" Newsweek reached out to Claire for comment.At the time of writing, the video has been watched over 660,000 times with viewers taking to the comments section accompanying the video to offer their own theories as to how Tutti ended up with his unusual fur coloring. It's not the first time a cat's unusual coloring has captivated the internet."Does anyone have a new pair of blue jeans in the house? Yes. I am aging myself by calling them blue jeans," one user wrote. "It could be grass dye too, are you next to a golf course, mini golf or any large grassy areas?" another suggested.A third, meanwhile, offered up the theory: "Sidewalk chalk? maybe rolled into a kiddos sidewalk artwork." Responding to the comments posted on the video, Claire appeared to confirm the latter of those three theories was correct and Tutti had, indeed, rolled in chalk.In truth, that's probably the best possible scenario, given the potential dangers posed to cats by hair dye.Over the past few weeks, Newsweek has reported on dogs being dyed a variety of unusual colors, there was a puppy who was turned purple by animal disinfectant and an adult dog with a fetching pink coat and a heartbreaking backstory.Cats rarely feature in these kinds of stories though and there is a reason for that.As veterinarian Dr. Justine A. Lee explained in an interview with PetHealthNetwork, "even simple products such as hair dyes and certain chemicals can potentially be dangerous to cats.""Cats have an altered liver metabolism and can't breakdown certain drugs or chemicals well," she said. "Because of cats' unique metabolism, even common household products such as laundry detergent, liquid potpourris and other chemicals can be corrosive or poisonous!"Dr. Lee adds that while there are cat-friendly dye products, vigilance is crucial. "For any product you use on your cat, make sure it isn't sugar-free and doesn't contain xylitol," she said. "Also know that just because it's "natural" doesn't mean it's safe for cats."
