Patrick Reed branded 'toxic' in astonishing blast as golf star dismissed for Team USA Ryder Cup slot

Patrick Reed has been controversially tagged toxic with his chance of making the Ryder Cup team dismissed. The American ace is determined to fight for a place in Keegan Bradley’s United States side for the clash against Europe in September. Reed’s win at LIV Golf Dallas last weekend has boosted his belief as he gets set to tee-up at this week’s BMW International in Germany. However, having had a brush in the past with team-mates after criticism of captain Jim Furyk's set-up following the 2018 defeat in Paris, the 34-year-old’s hopes have been pushed aside in highly-emotive fashion by NBC analyst Eamon Lynch. Reed, who has an excellent playing record in the Ryder Cup from his past outings, hit out at the pairings and planning of the defeated skipper at Le Golf Nacional. Speaking on the channel’s Golf Today show, Lynch assessed Reed’s chances of being picked and didn't hold back as he said: “As a European, I hope he is. At a certain point, I think if you go back to the Gleneagles Ryder Cup [in 2014], that’s when the American team decided to prize unity over everything else. And that really became emphasised after Reed’s contretemps in Paris with Jim Furyk. “If you’re Keegan Bradley and you have a deep bench on your team, the idea of introducing toxicity into the team room makes no sense whatsoever. And it doesn’t get much more toxic than Team Reed. The idea of introducing that into a team room when you don’t need it just seems to me so outlandish.” Reed believes he can make the side, but accepts he may have to win The Open Championship at Royal Portrush to do so. He was third at The Masters and also tied-23rd at the US Open and, speaking on the eve of his Dallas win, he said: “Really, it’s all going to come to I feel like the Open Championship. Have a chance to win there and have a really good showing and play well there, then you just never know. It’s looking like, no matter what, it’s gonna rely on a pick unless I go ahead and win the Open. So really the only way I can focus on Ryder Cup is to kind of that one week, give it all I have and have a chance to win. “It’s always on your mind. Anytime I get to represent our country, it means a lot to me. I’m always thinking about trying to make every team. Obviously being a part of LIV where we don’t get points, it’s an uphill battle. But really for me, it’s focused on playing some great golf and having a chance.” Having subsequently been told by a reporter following his victory in Texas that fans on site had said they wanted his inclusion, Reed said simply: “I appreciate it, buddy. So do I.”
