Premier League release statement after Man United decision sparks Aston Villa fury
@Source: manchestereveningnews.co.uk
The Premier League have confirmed that Morgan Rogers' goal for Aston Villa against Manchester United could not be given by VAR because referee Thomas Bramall had already blown his whistle. Villa thought they had gone 1-0 up at Old Trafford when Rogers capitalised on errors from Harry Maguire and Altay Bayindir to slot home. However, after pipping Bayindir to the ball, referee Bramall blew his whistle for a foul on the goalkeeper. A foul was given after Rogers looked as though he had nicked the ball from Bayindir, who had two hands on the ball. However, the Turkey international didn't and his blushes was spared. Replays showed that Bayindir didn't have two hands on the ball and the decision to take the goal away left Unai Emery fuming. Villa's frustration then got worse when United scored twice to condemn the Midlands side to Europa League football. Confirming why the goal was disallowed, the Premier League's Match Centre released the following statement: "The referee’s call was a free kick to Manchester United with Bayindir deemed to be in control of the ball before Rogers gained possession. "The whistle was blown by the referee before the ball entered the goal, therefore the incident was not reviewable by the VAR ." Moments after Rogers' goal was disallowed, Amad put United ahead before Christian Eriksen dispatched a penalty. Villa boss Emery vented his frustration by sarcastically applauding the decision to give United a penalty.
