Princess Charlene of Monaco was meant to accompany her husband, Prince Albert, on his visit to Japan. However, the palace announced earlier this week that the princess, along with the couple's children, Prince Jacques and Princess Gabriella, have pulled out of the trip. In a press release on June 25, the palace said that the princess and the 10-year-old twins would not be participating in the trip "in light of current events taking place in the Middle East." In her stead, Prince Albert will be joined by his sister, Princess Stephanie, and her children, Louis Ducret, Pauline Ducruet, and Camille Gottlieb, as well as Louis's wife, Marie. "Princess Charlene wishes to express her sincere thanks to the teams of the Monaco Pavilion, as well as to the partners and hosts who were to welcome her in Japan, for their understanding and ongoing commitment," the palace said in their statement. The trip kicked off on June 27, with the United Through Legends soccer match between Japan Legends and Les Barbagiuans of Monaco, which Louis is president of. It also coincides with the Osaka World Expo, which spans from April to October of this year. Louis previously said in a statement, “We are honored to organize this charity match in Japan, in the same year as the Osaka World Expo. This event symbolizes the enduring friendship between Monaco and Japan. Through football, we aim to send a message of solidarity to the victims of the Noto earthquake. We are proud that legends of the sport are coming together for this noble cause." The royal family will also celebrate Monaco's National Day on June 28, as well as Albert and Charlene's 14th wedding anniversary on July 1. Prince Albert and Princess Charlene welcomed their twins on Dec. 10, 2014. Though born second, Prince Jacques is the heir apparent to his father's throne, while Princess Gabriella carries the title Countess of Carladès. In a November 2024 interview with the French publication Gala, Charlene opened up about the unique experience of parenting twins. “Gabriella is very curious,” she explained. “She is very intrigued by the world and life in general. She asks lots of questions and demands a lot of attention.” “As for Jacques, he is curious and observant. More reserved, he is naturally very calm,” Charlene continued. Conflict in the Middle East escalated this week as President Donald Trump directed U.S. troops to bomb Iran amid the country's ongoing conflict with Israel. After bombing three Iranian nuclear sites on Saturday, June 21, Trump addressed the nation from the White House, alongside Vice President J.D. Vance, Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth. "Our objective was the destruction of Iran's nuclear enrichment capacity and a stop to the nuclear threat," he said. "Tonight, I can report to the world that the strikes were a spectacular military success. Iran's key nuclear enrichment facilities have been completely and totally obliterated." At the NATO Summit later in the week, Trump invoked the memory of the United States' nuclear bombing of Japan to end World War II when asked about his actions against Iran. "I don't want to use an example of Hiroshima, I don't want to use an example of Nagasaki, but that was essentially the same thing. That ended that war. This ended the war," he told reporters on Wednesday.
