Rory McIlroy Masters Pressure Amped to 11 with Brandel Chamblee Remark
@Source: newsweek.com
Rory McIlroy is once again one of the top favorites to win The Masters Tournament. It is not an unfamiliar feeling for him, but he has never been in a better position than now to win the only major title missing from his trophy case.At least that's the way Brandle Chamblee sees it.The well-known former PGA Tour pro and current Golf Channel commentator recently weighed in on the subject. If the pressure from McIlroy himself and the fans wasn't high enough, Chamblee's opinion certainly helped turn it up a notch."This Masters is his to win or lose," Chamblee said, according to the Jacksonville Florida Times-Union. "From a technical and mental standpoint, this is Rory's. There has never been a better week for him to win the Masters. His chief opponents are all a little off their game."Chamblee was referring to players like Scottie Scheffler and Xander Schauffele, who had a slow start to the season due to injury and have yet to peak. Other favorites such as Bryson DeChambeau and Collin Morikawa have posted solid results this season, but not at McIlroy's level.However, Chamblee did not forget the serious problem that Augusta National has posed for the 4-time major winner in his career."I would say that Augusta National is the Miranda Priestly to Rory McIlroy's Andrea Sachs," Chamblee said, referring to the movie 'The Devil Wears Prada'. "It is literally his nemesis. It brings out the worst golf in Rory annually that we see.""He annually underperforms there. He hits on average about 42 greens. On average, the winner hits about 52. There are things about that golf course that have been very problematic for him."The comments appear somewhat shortsighted.McIlroy has not been short of success at the Masters Tournament, although he has never won the title. In 16 appearances (13 cuts made), he has finished in the top 10 seven times, including four top 5s. His best result was a tie for second in 2022.However, his setbacks have also been famous, such as in the 2011 edition when he led the tournament after 54 holes, but completely lost the pace and carded an 80 in the final round, dropping 15 places on the leaderboard.The 35-year-old has started the PGA Tour season on fire. He has finished in the top 20 in all five tournaments he has played in 2025, with two relevant victories at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am and The PLAYERS Championship. His last start before the Masters was the Texas Children's Houston Open, where he tied for 5th.More Golf: Tiger Woods Has Company in $100M Club in PGA Tour History
