@Source: buffalonews.com
WNY Walleye Tournament set for Aug. 22-23 Western New York Walleye announced the group’s club tournament is set for Aug. 22-23 in the New York waters of Lake Erie (including the Upper Niagara River). Everything will be managed through the Fish Donkey app, where teams will pay for the main event on Saturday ($250) and the optional Big Fish Friday ($100). Teams of two to five anglers will compete to catch their three longest walleyes for the main event, all registered through the app. Take plenty of photos. Friday is based on the single longest fish. Prize money will be paid to the top three places, with 80% of the entry fee money collected to be distributed in a 40%, 25% and 15% breakdown. The remainder of the entry fees collected will be allocated to the club’s kids fund to support future events. At least one current member of WNY Walleye must be on a team. Fishing will begin at 7 a.m. each day, ending by 3:30 p.m. If inclement weather cancels the event on Saturday, the tournament will be run on Sunday. The deadline to register is Aug. 21. Waterfowl hunting applications open for Tonawanda, Oak Orchard If you are interested in waterfowl hunting opening weekend Oct. 11-12 at either Tonawanda or Oak Orchard Wildlife Management Areas, the state’s Department of Environmental Conservation is accepting waterfowl permit lottery applications online through a link at survey123.arcgis.com/share/e403433904494ef19f6ba09a3475f8eb. In the interest of safety and quality of the hunt, DEC holds a drawing to limit the number of duck hunters at these popular public locations. There are typically 100 permits for Tonawanda and 50 permits for Oak Orchard. The deadline for submitting applications is Sept. 15. For questions or concerns about the permit lottery or access to the online entry form, contact the DEC Iroquois Wildlife Field Office at 585-948-5182. Anyone unable to complete the online survey should contact the office before the Sept. 15 deadline. For more information on the Tonawanda and Oak Orchard WMAs, visit dec.ny.gov/outdoor/24442.html. DEC seeks help with turkey sightings August is the time of year when biologists with the Department of Environmental Conservation seek assistance from the public to participate in the state’s annual survey for wild turkeys. The agency is looking for information such as dates, locations, the sex of the birds and ages of the birds being observed for the entire month. To make things simple, there is an online form that can be accessed through the DEC website at dec.ny.gov/nature/animals-fish-plants/biodiversity-species-conservation/citizen-science/summer-wild-turkey-sighting-survey. The state has conducted the Summer Wild Turkey Sighting Survey since 1996. Collecting these observations will help biologists assess how productive the turkey population is each year. They can then compare the results to previous years as they work to manage populations throughout the Empire State. Summary data from the survey is posted on the Fall Turkey Harvest and Productivity Dashboard on the website. Southtowns Walleye Kids Day is Aug. 21 The Southtowns Walleye Association of WNY will hold a special Kids Day prior to its regular monthly meeting on Aug. 21. The gathering will be at the group’s clubhouse located at 5895 Southwestern Blvd., Hamburg. The Kids Day function begins at 6 p.m. with the regular meeting beginning at 7. Included among the youth activities will be the opportunity to paint your own stickbait (provided by the club) and casting practice using the club casting boards. There also will be guest speakers from DEC and from fireboat E.M. Cotter. It is free to attend, and children must be 15 years old or younger. For more information, contact Amy Plecas at 649-8202.
