Shocking moment Jon Rahm almost snaps his club in fury amid frustrating Masters opening round READ MORE: Justin Rose storms into three-shot lead after opening round By ISABEL BALDWIN Published: 03:06 BST, 11 April 2025 | Updated: 03:07 BST, 11 April 2025 Former Masters champion Jon Rahm was far from enjoying the same success as he did in 2023 on Thursday and he appeared to be taking it out on his club. The 30-year-old endured a frustrating opening round at Augusta National, carding a three-over 75 as he looked to return to form at a major championship for the first time since he defected to LIV Golf in December 2023. And nine holes into his quest, the frustration already appeared to be getting too much for the hot-headed Spaniard to endure. On the ninth tee, Rahm fired his tee shot deep into the woods on the right edge of the fairway. As he watched his ball soar way off course, he dropped his club in disbelief before kicking it. Rahm was already two-over for the day as it seemed the errant drive was almost the final straw as he then picked up the club and almost snapped it between his two hands. 'Be careful, you might need that a little later on,' the commentator quipped, and he was right. Rahm went on to miraculously make par at the ninth, despite his little detour, but he dropped another shot at the tenth where he slumped to three-over. He sits in a tie for 63rd following the first 18 holes at Augusta. The incident summarized the two-time major winner's toils not only out on Augusta Thursday but also his recent major championship appearances. Since jumping ship to join LIV on a reported $500million deal in 2023, Rahm has struggled on golf's greatest stages. He finished tied for 45th at the 2024 Masters, before missing the cut at the PGA Championship at Valhalla. He didn't even have chance to tee it up at Pinehurst, withdrawing from the US Open due to a toe injury. Rahm did manage to bounce back at The Open, finishing tied for seventh at Royal Troon. Yet, speaking to reporters ahead of this week's tournament, Rahm claimed his game had been unfairly judged since his LIV move. He said: 'I think last year the state of my game was being unfairly judged based on how I played here and at the PGA compared to how I really played throughout the whole year. 'While I understand why, I don't think it was the most fair.'
