May 3 (UPI) -- Sovereignty rallied by Journalism in deep stretch to win Saturday's 151st Kentucky Derby, providing Dubai-based Godolphin an international weekend trifecta of classic race victories.
Sovereignty, last seen finishing second in the Florida Derby, came from well off the pace in the Derby had only Santa Anita Derby winner Journalism to catch as the race neared the finish line. With Junior Alvarado riding, he slowly cut into the lead and was well in front at the end.
Journalism held second, with Santa Anita Derby runner-up Baeza third and Final Gambit, making his first start on dirt, fourth. The race was timed in 2:02.31 over a sloppy track.
Bill Mott trains Sovereignty for Godolphin, the racing entity of Sheik Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the ruler of Dubai. Godolphin also won Friday's Kentucky Oaks with Good Cheer and earlier Saturday won the first of the European Classics, the Group 1 English 2,000 Guineas, with Ruling Court.
