President Alexander Stubb on Tuesday reiterated that Greenland is part of the Kingdom of Denmark and its future is for the Greenlandic people to decide.
"I think they will decide, even if there is a lot of noise about it," Stubb said at a session of the Nordic Council in Helsinki.
The Nordic Council is an inter-parliamentary organisation composed of Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Iceland and Finland.
Answering questions from Nordic parliamentarians, Stubb also stressed that US plans to purchase icebreakers from Finland have nothing to do with Greenland.
According to Stubb, the US interest in icebreakers is linked to the fact that Russia currently has 48 icebreakers, while the US has no modern ones.
After a golf trip to Mar-a-Lago with US President Donald Trump this past weekend, Stubb's comments were of heightened interest to the Nordic parliamentarians.
Stubb added that the Nordic countries must invest in bilateral relations and strongly engage with the US to ensure that it does not go in the wrong direction.
Stubb also emphasised that he saw no signs from "serious people" that the US was prepared to withdraw from Nato.
Stubb: No better societal model than the Nordics
Stubb arrived back in Helsinki at the Nordic Council session after a long week of travel.
"If I look a bit tired, it's because I'm tired. I have a longer journey behind me, which started in Rauma last Wednesday. From there, I went to Paris, then to Florida and London and landed last night," Stubb said, describing his last few days at the beginning of his speech.
In his opening speech, Stubb said that the Nordic countries stand for common fundamental values, which are vital to uphold in a turbulent world.
"There is no better societal model than what we have. We are one of the most successful regions in world history because our values are so strong," Stubb said, praising Nordic cooperation.
He also stressed the value of trust in Nordic societies, which he described as a valuable asset in times of broken promises.
Stubb said the Nordic countries should also increase their defence cooperation, for example, by stepping up joint procurement. He added that there is also room to improve defence cooperation legislation.
At the Nordic Council's session, around 90 Nordic MPs will discuss how to develop security and preparedness in the Nordic region in times of increasing security challenges. The discussions will focus in particular on security and security of supply in the Baltic Sea region.
Stubb was the session's keynote speaker, but left due to celebrating his 57th birthday on Tuesday. The inter-parliamentary session sang a song to celebrate the Finnish president's birthday.
The session will also be attended by members of the Baltic Assembly, the West Nordic Council, the Baltic Sea Parliamentary Conference and the Benelux Parliament.
