Saturday, March 1, marked the 64th year since launch of the Peace Corps. Its unwavering mission of promoting cross-cultural understanding and grass-roots development profoundly changed me.
Returning to Northeast Ohio after my service, I focused on community-based architecture. My story is common for many returned volunteers, and reflects the Peace Corps' “domestic dividend.”
Peace Corps volunteers also witness firsthand work of the U.S. Agency for International Development. Besides providing concrete assets for physical needs, USAID, by its very presence, provides recognition of unseen suffering around the globe, a powerful combination of care.
This uniquely American sense of generosity and encouragement radiates benefits far above a bottom-line mentality. On the Peace Corps' 64th birthday, I want to thank our USAID colleagues and hope for the repair and restoration of the web of our planetary commitment of care.
